It’s gonna be a short Totally Awkward Tuesday today! Why? Cause I’m lazy and I have to get to work. I’ve been up since 4:30 for the gym and I’m running late now (not too late that I couldn’t just down a HUGE bowl of Lucky Charms, but whatev).
When I was home visiting BF this weekend we decided to play a little putt-putt. We started out behind a group of four people… they were awful. And they must be pretty bad for me to say that, cause I am not at all good (nor do I claim to be good) at putt-putt. But all four of them were bad. Like, every hole hit the max bad. But that wasn’t the frustrating part.
The frustrating part was that two 17-year old girls got in line behind us. Wait. Let me rephrase. Two 17-year old girls got awkwardly close behind our butts. Seriously.
BF knows me fairly well to a T. He knows what makes me happy, but also what annoys me to no end. Not obeying the ‘rules of public space’ is my numero uno peeve.
I bit my tounge.
But by hole 3, BF looks at me and says “They don’t really get the whole concept of personal space, huh?” To which I was relieved that it wasn’t just me who noticed. He said that he felt he better say something because he knew it was killing me.
Hole 10. Or at least I think it was that hole. Who knows. Anyways, it’s this really weird hole with a giant waterfall contraption in the middle of it. You can’t really see if the people ahead of you are finished. So BF and I putted away. As soon as we both teed off (umm not quite), these girls walked pretty much all the way up to where we were putting. This just pushed me over the edge. I looked at the one girl and said “We can just let you know when we’re done.”
And the girl said… “Oh no. That’s ok.” Like “no big deal.”
UMMM yes. On top of them being unusually up in our space, they kept talking really loud about all of these high school things. WE.DON’T.CARE! Grr.
All we wanted to do was play a little putt-putt, but it was ruined by two annoying high school girls.
Am I just overly sensitive to people? Or does anyone else feel that there are social rules of public spaces that need to be obeyed?

I totally agree. I get annoyed with people easily sometimes and that would have drove me nuts!
Were we all that annoying when we were 17??? Or did we all just think we were just too cool…LOL.

Personal space is something I'm picky about as well…there's nothing more frustrating than feeling invaded while you're trying to just go about your business. Especially if the invaders are talking really loudly about stupid, high school girl drama. Lame!
Sunshinemeg
This is really annoying. They had to know they were all in your space.
Summer Wind
That is annoying!I agree with you.

lol…totally agree. I was at a football game last night and 3 high school boys kept talking about you know – high school things – about girls – ALL through the first half of the game – trying to be all 'cool' I was about to turn around and say something, but I bit my tongue! tell em to get out of your bubble ๐

OMG I *hate* when people invade my personal space!! Every once in a while, I will run into a family at WDW that will do that to me. Like once, I was waiting for one of the parades to start. I staked out a good spot, kinda early, and was waiting. This family with like 82 kids in it showed up 10 minutes before parade time & tried to wedge themselves into the space between me & the family that was to my right (to my left was a walkway that needed to be kept clear). This space? Was enough room for a smaller adult or two very small children, maximum. So they kept slowly cramming more people into this space (and hello! it's HOT in Florida! not exactly where you want someone else's sticky little kids climbing all over you!) and the kids would keep sitting literally against me, so I would scoot over a little. And they would encroach my space again. And again. Until I had reached the furthest I could go to my left–which was a total of about 3 inches from where I started. They were doing this to the family on their other side too & everyone was getting so freaking annoyed. There wasn't enough room for a group that large. The rest of us planned our day & got there with enough time to seat ourselves. And now we're getting shoved aside to make room for te late-comers who have zero respect for the personal space of others?? Rude.

Totally agree. I hate when people I don't know are all up in my space!
*krystyn*
I am SOOO sensitive to the personal sapce issue – I would have probably gone off on those girls…or let them pass me on the putt putt course -just to get the heck away from them. Sorry they ruined it for you!! Argh!!

I HATE people who don't get personal space!!
JennyMac
Personal space = critical. Unless its my little man or Hub. Girls at putt putt? Not so much.
Melissa
I totally would have bee annoyed too!
Lil' Woman
You should have told them that if they were going to ride your ass then atleast pull your hair…they would have been speechless! ๐
Brandi
I HATE when people invade my personal space like that. Which totally explains why I get stressed out and annoyed when I am living in or visiting Europe! Fair warning to those who haven't been – there is NO CONCEPT of personal space over there! End rant. ๐

AGREED!
Raine
Agreed. You shouldve kicked them ๐

I think I use to have a bigger bubble, but the military has this way of erasing your bubble by forcing you to stand in line all the time. You want breakfast, stand in line, lunch, get in line, dinner, get in line, shots, get in a super long line, your sick, get in line, you want to get on the ship, get in line, off the ship, bigger line… anyway, you get the idea, you get a little less sensitive to it after years and years, but it still does bother me, ESPECIALLY if Im NOT in line, therefore, no reason for someone to get into my ever shrinking bubble… Geeez people STAY OUT OF RACHELS BUBBLE!!

the fact that you get up at 4:30 to work out still floors me

Oh, that is soooo annoying! I cannot stand it when people crowd you for no reason and obviously have no concept of personal space (and an inability to take a hint)!
Hope the rest of your week goes better!

I agree! How annoying! Some people just aren't aware of personal space. They never learned the “hula hoop.”
Chele76
I'm in complete agreement with you. It's disturbing just how many people have no concept of personal space. I understand when its kids… but teenagers? They should know by now.

I think you will appreciate this. When working with a former client of mine (she was 5), we would refer to our personal space as a hula hoop. When she would get too close, I would tell her she was in my hula hoop, and that was her cue to back up. You should have told those girls they were in your hula hoop!
