the first day

The first day of the rest of your life. Why do people say this? What is this supposed to mean?

I count recall all of the times I’ve heard this phrase.

Kindergarten. “The first day of the rest of your life.”

Graduating high school. “The first day of the rest of your life.”

First day of college. “The first day of the rest of your life.”

College graduation. “The first day of the rest of your life.”

and then a few nights ago my father said something similar to me.

I was having a rough time. With the move, being apart from those I love, and the like. My dad said that he admired my courage. My courage to try something. To take a risk. Dare I say, the first day of the rest of my life.

No. I refuse. No single day can be the first day of the rest of my life. My life doesn’t begin nor does it end when I go through stages of life.

It’s a journey. And I’m gonna live it.

I agree. Each day of your life should be a day that pushes you forward to something new, better, more fun…good luck!

I love this. It's not just those big days that can be “the first day of the rest of your life”. Thursday could be the first day of the rest of your life. Sometimes great things come about slowly and sometimes they're a big surprise, but rarely do they occur when I'm expecting them.

I so admire you for picking up and moving like that. I honestly don't think I could have done it, but I wish I could!

Instead of one day at a time like they say, take one step at a time. You will find your way. Lovely post.

Definitely agree with this. I always try to believe that if I just keep going, I'll end up where I am suppose to be.

First days…defining moments. Whatever anyone calls them, they are sometimes very, very difficult. I just came to the realization last weekend that my only grandbabies, so far, are not going to be living far away for just a few years, but forever. I am glad my daughter and hubby had the courage to leave and try to catch their dreams, but feeling sorry for me! Just don't let anything stand in your way.

    I have to agree.
What does that mean anyway, that the days leading up to this were nothing…hmm

I dont know. I think I disagree. I feel like every day is the first day of the rest of your life. I dont think it means that the other stuff doesnt matter, it just means that today is new and fresh. There are possiblities today. Today I can do something different. If I want. Or I can continue what I am doing. The rest of my life starts today.

huh. Maybe this will become a daily affirmation? Great post!

I don't think any one day should be the first day of the rest of your life. I think *each* day should be. You wake up, you get a fresh start, you keep living your life, one precious day at a time.
