The Blogger Burnout.

August 9, 2017 by Rachel 36 Comments

I have a confession: I’m a little burnt out. I realize my writing and posting has gotten further and further apart (like, often times a week to ten days), but it’s not for lack of ideas. Oh no, I have plenty of ideas and plenty of half-finished blog posts…

…it’s for lack of enthusiasm.

I’m. just. so. tired. By the time I sit down at my computer, finishing up editing photos and blog posts and going through emails is honestly the last thing I want to be doing.

This summer has kicked my ass in the best way possible. I’ve worked really hard, both at blogging and at my other job; I’ve maintained a steady schedule with the kids and keeping up on chores; we’ve had a lot of fun and so many adventures; and I’ve cultivated new friendships and opportunities.

But I’m so tired. So I’ve been treating myself to some much-needed rest and relaxation (except, without the relaxation. You know, because I have a 4 year old and ting terror of an 18 month old).

I’ve been sleeping 8+ hours at night. Sleep is my love language. It really is. And I’ve been forgoing events and blog work so that I can watch movies in bed with Ari and then passing out at 9pm. ??‍♀️

I’ve been getting housework done. I am a tad bit obsessed with keeping up with housework. Especially the dishes, vacuuming, and the bathroom. But there were weeks where I was falling way behind and then stressing all weekend. But the last couple of weeks I’ve been just staying on it. Instead of sitting down at my computer I’ve been folding clothes + putting the dishes away. And it’s lifted such a burden off my chest. It truly has.

I’ve been napping. Yep. Even after a full night of sleep, I’ve been taking a short snooze and getting some Ari snuggles in the afternoons.

I’ve been more engaged with my kids and my to-do list. No, I haven’t been a perfect mom — far from it! But I’ve been more present, for sure! I’ve just been spending a little more time listening to their demands instead of my own.

Right now I am giving myself some blogging grace. I’ve always done the opposite — given myself real-life grace and then buckled down on blog work. But no. Not right this moment. Right now I’m breathing deep, sleeping in, and taking care of real-life stuff.

But good things are coming. I promise! ❤️ Thanks for hanging by my side!

Giving yourself a blogging break is A-OK! Sounds like you’re having just the kind of summer you need to be having.

I love the humanness of this post! So often we get caught up in the image we want to project rather than living aligned with our authenticity. I so appreciate you sharing the realities that so many of us face!

Everybody needs breaks. I just stopped blogging for a few weeks just bc there was so much else to do. Now I am back very motivated and full of new ideas. In the end it is important to listen to your feelings.

Blogging grace – I love it! I’ve started giving myself certain time limits once a week to get a post done, with the understanding that 1) If it doesn’t get done, it doesn’t get done and that’s okay and 2) My family is still my priority. I love that you have a focus on being present with your kids! Your summer sounds absolutely wonderful 🙂

I think a break from blogging is a must! You need to re-charge and get your creative energy back by resting your brain and just giving yourself some ‘you’ time aside from your blog!!

Girl, I have been there. When blogging starts to feel like a chore instead of fun, it’s oh so important to take a break and focus on other things we love. That passion will inspire you in new ways for your blog!!!

I feel the same way right now! It’s just way too hard over the Summer and I have NO energy when I sit down to work. I had big plans to write 4 new posts to fill my schedule while I’m at the beach next week, but I want to take a break and not worry about the blog for one full week! I ended up asking for guest posts and got it covered. I can’t wait to take a break! I’m glad you are allowing yourself to do the same! XOXO

Blogging burnout is real, but real life grace + rest is SO necessary. Our blogs are important, but maintaining a healthy life is much more so. 🙂
Glad you’ve found a way to keep on top of real life duties without the guilt – some people can’t manage that!

I totally understand. This summer has been crazy for me too. I have focused a lot on my family and myself, and I’m okay with that. Finding a healthy balance that works for you is what’s most important.

I find like there is this ebb and flow… and when I focus on being really present and on my home life, sometimes my blog life suffers, but we need both! We need to take the breaks as we need them and focus on blog work when we need to. You’ve got this mama!! We do, together! 🙂

I feel you mama, it is a full time job, on top of a full time job, and raising a family. It is exhausting, and some days its just good to detach until you get your groove back again.

I went through that earlier this year. I took about a month and a half off from posting anything at all, and I definitely needed it. Good for you for taking care of yourself and know when you need a little break! Nothing wrong with that.

I’m sorry you’re feeling burned out! I’m feeling a little bit that way too. I feel overwhelmed with all of the blogging stuff on top of my regular to-do list and I’m just so tired! I can’t seem to get everything done and I feel behind. Lately I haven’t been very inspired to write blog posts. Sigh. Maybe I’ll feel more motivated soon.

I LOVE that your blog is called “it’s a hero” because this post just made you my hero. I feel like all I do is struggle with the realization that I need a break, that I need rest, that I need 8 hours of sleep and a regular schedule … and then stressing out that there’s so much to do … and then I get cranky and upset that I can’t do it all AND get the rest I need. It’s like an endless cycle of frustration. I love that you had the guts to stop and rest this summer. My hubby and I have been talking about making some changes so our family can have what we all need. Prayers appreciated! 😀
