yoga

life lately //

March 11, 2015 by Rachel 1 Comment

The last month has virtually flown by. It’s been a whirlwind of exhaustion, cold, fun, illness, and what was nonstop marathon training.

Here’s a recap of what we’ve been up to as of late:

CLE-BOT-2
1. It turns out my kid is afraid of giant plants. A few weeks ago Moosh and I went up to Cleveland to hit up the Cleveland Museum of Natural History… but the parking lot was full. I took that as a sign that we should find another place to explore. So we went to the Cleveland Botanical Gardens. I thought “Hey! This is a great idea!”

CLE-BOT3
And the gardens were absolutely stunning. There was just one teeny problem. Moosh was absolutely petrified of the plants. Heck, even the flowers. I think the size of the leaves and trees was what was scaring him. Either way, I of course, thought it was kinda funny. And then I was kinda frustrated that he didn’t want me to set him down to walk around. In fact, he clung to me so tight that when we got close to a plant, he squeezed his thighs around my hips and wouldn’t budge.

CLE-BOT-1

I laughed. All the older people who were there enjoying the gardens probably thought I was a bad mom. Oh well. 🙂

barrio-2
2. Lunch date at Barrio in Lakewood. Post-Botanical Gardens, we headed to Lakewood for some tacos with Grandma Dee (my aunt/Godmother). I was beyond happy to see that Barrio was now open for lunch. If there’s two things that Moosh and I can agree on, it’s fruity drinks (his non-alcoholic, of course) and cheese dip.

barrio1
Add in an empty restaurant full of staff who thought Moosh was the cutest thing ever? Day. Made. Totally makes up for his fear of gardens.

barrio-1
Also? Tacos. Yummy, yummy, tacos for the win. I’m definitely not mad that Barrio is open for lunch. Just sayin’.

3. Chocolate. Lots of chocolate. While I was in Lakewood I stopped by Sweet Designs (if you recall this is THE chocolatier that changed my views of chocolate forever). I nearly forgot that the next day was Valentine’s Day and that it would be crazy, but this mama was determined to get some (and by some, I mean a pound) of sponge candy! I may have also picked up a handful (or four) of other chocolate goodies for Chad and Moosh. What? It’s a once a year splurge! 😛

playdate
4. Play dates galore. Thank you, Café O’Play, for the neverending fun (and exhaustion)! We’ve been meeting up with friends for lunch and playdates as much as possible as of late. The new indoor play place near our house, Café O’Play has been an awesome go-to winter play place.

playdate1
Also? They had Ari’s hero come in for a visit while we were there — TINKERBELL! (Yes, our sons two heroes are Thomas the Tank and Tinkerbell. But for serious – have you seen the Tink movies!? Awesome!).

tink
5. Tumbling. Ari’s third (or is it fourth?) session of Wee Tumblers is officially over, complete with one final meltdown on the last day. We LOVE tumbling because it complete wears him out on a weeknight. Bonus? He has SO MUCH FUN. Who knew paddy cake would be the coolest thing ever?

family
6. Family time. Besides playdates, we’ve been soaking up time with each other. Ari has been a mega ham for the camera and, honestly, a little blogging break as of late, has done wonders for my marriage. I’ve been spending more time with Chad in the evenings after work. Just me + him (sure, sometimes me and him and Ari), hanging out on the couch before bed.

Mimi and Poppy have also been up to visit a few times as of late, so we’ve been spending as much time with them as possible before they trek back to Kentucky. Sometimes that even means hanging out on the floor by the fire. LOL. (Hence the picture above).

painting
When Moosh and I have our days off together I try to do fun things with him. When that isn’t visiting the (scary) botanical gardens, that usually means a day of crafts. Recently we went to paint pottery and his little crafty heart was so, SO, full! And so was mine

7. Just keep running. I’ve already announced that I’ve put marathon training on the backburner until Moosh is older; but that hasn’t stopped my aspirations to run and keep training. I will continue to run after a ten day break (doctors orders, per a fairly severe pulled muscle). All the running and (mostly) clean-eating has helped tremendously with my continued (slow, but steady) weight loss.

8. Sickies galore. Thanks to a seemingly extra-long and extra-cold winter, this mama has been fighting off everything under the sun for the last several weeks. And after just getting rid of a nasty stomach bug, I ended up in the ER the other day because I may have accidentally inhaled tiny particles of glass while I was cleaning up the shattered glass door to our entertainment center (#toddlers). Oops.

hospital
9. Buh-bye, Mercury in retrograde! I had never bought into the astrology thing before; but while mercury was in retrograde, we had a plethora of less than stellar things happen. In fact, we were overwhelmed. First, I was sick. Then, on my way to work, a tire blew out on my car. Four new tires later, Chad’s car breaks down… no brakes. We got sick again. Pretty much one thing after another after another. It was bad, but thankfully, things got better! Hooray hooray! PS. Right after my car started feeling like a new car (thanks, new tires), we actually bought a new car to replace Chad’s old car!

newcar
I’m kind of in love with the new car. I’ve promised to keep this car clean because, well, mine is NOT. Mine is a mess full of stuff from Moosh and food he’s thrown on the floor. It’s just… not pretty. But I’m determined not to get this beauty dirty.

10. We spent our second night EVER away from Ari. Big thanks to Mimi and Poppy for taking Ari for a night. We had our second ever night without him. It was… weird. But wonderful! We had our own little buffet of cheese and meats. And sparkly wine!

cheese2
I’m grateful that we had that time. But still, it really opened up our eyes that our family is really most complete when there are three of us under one roof. However, we need to make more times for moments like this, even if it’s just after Ari goes to sleep.

11. Yoga night with the MRTT ladies. I went up to Harmony Studios in Willoughby in the middle of a major snowstorm to take a yoga class made for runners with the Moms Run This Town Cleveland Chapter ladies!

mrttyoga
 So yeah, we’ve been busy. Very busy. Sure, there are a few things that I would have liked to have not happened over the last couple of months. But honestly? We survived. And just like this weeks’ mantra stated — I’ll continue to survive. <3

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This particular week in January always seems to rock my world. Even after 24-years — even after thinking that I’ve completely grieved — it still manages to rock me. So I’ve had a bit of an off week in an already “off” month. Blahhh.
But today is Friday, my day off. And as a bonus? I have a three-day weekend. I totally forgot I scheduled a vacation day for Saturday! Hooray for surprise three-day weekends!
So to get the ball rolling on a long weekend, I went to a 6:30 am yoga class. Because of COURSE I won’t actually sleep in on my day off. I only want to sleep in on workdays! Ha! Christina kicked my butt and it was exactly what I needed to start the weekend.
And now we’re off to a pediatric orthopedist for Ari. Yep. No big deal (I hope), but he has a bit of an issue with “in-toeing.” We’ll see what the doctors say, but I know he’s in good hands and that it’s better to get it looked at sooner than later! The realist in me is totally playing this off, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say that that it makes me a teeny bit nervous as a mom. Eek!
track
But post-doctor we have a LOT of fun planned. A playdate, a run on the indoor track at the gym, and perhaps even a nap. That’s right y’all, a nap! Just over here livin’ the dream! Ha!
In all seriousness, I think I need this three-day weekend in a major way. Husband time + Ari time + time alone = what should be the picture of perfection!
Why are you grateful for this weekend?
marathon training // an update
January 21, 2015 by Rachel Leave a Comment
During the holidays I was anticipating the impending doom of a training schedule. But I was ready for it… until I got the flu. It took a total of two weeks to fully recover. My doctor delayed the start of training for a week to make sure I was 100% in good health.
As difficult as it was, I listened to my doctors orders (ugh) and got myself back to 100%. It was totally worth it because when I jumped into training, I really, really, jumped in. All in.
I’m following the Hal Higdons training plan. Yes, novice, even though it seems a teeny bit too easy (thus far). But I’m working out as much as possible.
The plan is as follows:
  • 3-semi-easy runs during the week. Thus far, it’s been 3, 4, 5 miles on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays.
  • Mondays + Saturdays are my “rest days,” to which I’ve been having to convince myself to rest. Seriously. Once I commit to training, I really commit.
  • Long run Sunday. I have a love-hate relationship with long run Sunday. It’s both fantastic and awful at the same time. It’s a commitment on my calendar that is non-negotiable. I hate it at the beginning and I love it at the end.
    yogamat
  • Cross-training. Yoga and weight-lifting. Yay and nay. It hurts SO good. I’ve committed to a 6:30 AM hot power yoga class every Friday with one of my fave yoga teachers. Yeah, Friday is my day off; yep, I could be sleeping in; but I’m committed to this. I’m committed to getting stronger through this type of training.
The truth:
  • It sucks. And it’s awesome. It sucks because it’s incredibly time-consuming and that means I have to keep a very tight schedule and schedule every single workout; it’s awesome because I NEED to keep myself accountable; but it’s also hard being a working mom. ‘Cause things come up. Sometimes your kid goes batshit crazy on a day when you’re supposed to take him to the gym daycare. And things just don’t work out. But you have to make it work when you’re training for a marathon.
  • I’m adjusting the training schedule as the unanticipated conflicts come up. Saturday is supposed to be my long run day, but I work 8 hours on Saturdays… so long run day is Sunday instead. Minor adjustments,but still making sure to fit it all in — even the rest days!
  • There is a bit of guilt associated with rest days. I mean, I understand the need for rest days; but I’m always so torn inside. I *should* be working out, right?? Usually by my rest day I’m feeling awesome; I don’t feel like I need to rest. But then I remember that rest days are scheduled for a reason. So I rest. But the struggle is real, y’all.
Tips, tricks + inspiration are appreciated, friends! 🙂 XO
holiday wrap up! //
December 1, 2014 by Rachel Leave a Comment
[I feel the need to preface this post with two things: 1. Sorry for all the pictures; 2. Sorry all the pictures are of crappy quality. I’m tired]
Thank you to everyone who checked in with me over the last week or two. It’s been a rough couple of weeks, but I’m feeling so much better about everything since the holiday. <3
Wednesday when I (finally) got off of work, I came home to just relax. As I mentioned before, we cancelled our Thanksgiving plans to stay home. It was the first time in the seven years that Chad and I have been together that we have spent Thanksgiving alone. Well, alone meaning me + him + Moosh.
So we slept in until Moosh woke up on Thursday. And then we watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in our giant king sized bed (PS. it’s been a while since I’ve mentioned how much I LOVE our Sleep Number bed…. but it’s true. I love it so much). Moosh was completely entranced by the floats and characters.
thomas
Especially when Thomas the Tank Engine appeared around the corner. Just “CHOO CHOO! CHOO CHOOOOO!” nonstop. Freaking. Adorable.
tday1
We spent the rest of the morning lounging around. Literally. Parade + Ho Ho movies (which means Frozen + Saving Santa + Curious George Christmas) and spending time in our PJs. Perfection. No where to go; no where to be; nothing to do! Fantastic.We just cooked. Let’s be real. I didn’t cook. I just cleaned the green beans. Oh and I cleaned up after the real cook! Ha!
tday2
Our dinner was delicious. Chad made the turkey with the sous-vide. The mashed potatoes? Not potatoes at all… mashed cauliflower! Amazing cranberries & green beans. Oh. My. GOSH. So delicious.
tday5
Because our Thanksgiving was kind of last-minute, I didn’t plan for dessert. I ended up picking up a pie from The Blue Door Café. A delicious pumpkin pie with molasses crust!
tday6
It was incredible. After dinner when we were all struggling to stay out of a food coma, I decided to brave the Thanksgiving shopper crowds. First at Toys R Us, then at Target. I know, I know… I’m crazy. Luckily I wasn’t after any big items. Just some toddler toys for Moosh.
And honestly I had the BEST shopping experience ever. I usually hate going to Toys R Us. But, for whatever reason, the employees were incredibly helpful AND happy. I was in and out in no time at all!
tday7
And then… Target. I found my favorite Target pharmacist in the toy section just there to help out! Truth: The Target Pharmacy has the least convenient hours of any pharmacy ever; But they also have the most friendly and helpful pharmacists of all time. So I always go there for our prescriptions. And they make an effort to say hello when they see me outside of the pharmacy. Seeing a friendly face almost made the 30-minute wait to check out bearable. But in truth, I had no where else to be and I wasn’t in any sort of hurry. The most painful part of the line was the 20-something dude in front of me that commented on EVERY SINGLE ITEM he found in the aisles about how it “was on sale! Better buy it!” as he stood with his XBOX one game. I almost punched him in his childless, XBOX one playing face.
tday13
It’s hard to believe we packed that must awesome into one day. But we did. On Friday all I wanted to do was sleep in, but I was awake by 7AM. I almost crawled back into bed, but decided that since I was up, I had no excuse not to make it to a free yoga class at Lululemon. I’m so glad I went. It was just what my body (and my mind!) needed. Much love to Gretchen and the Lululemon crew for the amazing post-Thanksgiving burn!
tday8
In addition to the yoga, we went to the gym on Friday (while everyone else was busy working/shopping), and I went for a nice 3-mile run! It was a lovely day… minus the fact that Ari’s nasty cough came back and we had to use his nebulizer (his “Pup-pppeeee”). He’s become quite a champ at holding it himself.
We were all so exhausted by Friday evening that I ended up falling asleep before 8:30. Ha. But I had to get into work Saturday morning. (Yuck)
Luckily Saturday flew by. I came home to a happy baby and happy husband. Moosh and I played. And then the mister and I had an at-home date night, complete with red wine, The Maze Runner movie, and LOTS of cheese.
tday9
It was perfection. Complete perfection.
And Sunday was equally was awesome. We slept in until Moosh woke us up with his “Mommy??” over the monitor. And then we did more snuggling in bed while we watched Super Why.
tday10
This kid makes me SO happy! I was also lucky enough to meet up with my running partner for a nice 5 mile run on the towpath followed by an adventure with Moosh at Crafty Mart in Akron where we met up with Gretchen and her two boys!
tday12
tday11
Such a perfect perfect holiday. <3
give thanks + be grateful //
November 27, 2014 by Rachel Leave a Comment
givthanks
It’s easy to forget how much we have that we take for granted. We joke and say “first world problems,” but it’s totally, absolutely, 100% true (most of the time). This Thanksgiving Day is nothing like I planned on it being (I know, I know… I’m vague-blogging. Sorry.). We planned on travelling and spending the day surrounded by extended family; but due to other circumstances, we decided to stay home.
As much as I love keeping busy, I also need these couple of days to decompress and just BE. To be home, to have no plans, and to just be grateful for everything that I DO have. So I hope during the hustle and bustle of the start of this holiday season, you take a few moments to just be present with your life. You don’t have to necessarily be grateful (cause let’s face it — we all have s*** going on, right?) for everything; but truly feel the moment that you’re in.
OK, OK. I’ll get off my yoga mat now. 😉
drink NOOMA // Giveaway + Review
November 12, 2014 by Rachel 4 Comments
I remember being a young girl, playing soccer, and drinking sips of my dads Gatorade. Even at that age, I knew it didn’t agree with me. We didn’t drink sugary drinks like soda at home (or ever, really). The sips of the sports drinks that I would occasionally take disgusted me. To this day it baffles me that people drink that stuff. It immediately gives me a stomach ache. So I’ve been quite skeptical of electrolyte replacement drinks.
Just over a year ago I tried NOOMA for the first time at the Believe In CLE Rock and Roll Hall of Fame event. With skepticism and hesitation, I took a sip… and I loved it!
NOOMA NOOMA
was developed by two brothers in Cleveland, Brandon and Jarred. Their mission was to develop a hydration drink without acid or preservatives.
Here’s a bit from their website that really sums up the NOOMA mission and values:
Along the way the team began to realize what they were building was more than just a drink. It was a lifestyle. Wellness, balance, fitness and passion for what you love, became the foundations of NOOMA and what was truly important. Giving back also took on more importance to the team, lending their time, knowledge, resources and, of course, drinks to various organizations including The Boys and Girls Foundation, food banks, local schools and the Wounded Warrior Foundation.
NOOMACLE
My personal experience with NOOMA is that I can drink it during a power vinyasa yoga practice or after a long run on the Towpath and it’s completely gentle on my digestive system. It hydrates and provides the much needed lost electrolyte replacement from my workout.
NOOMAflavors
All 4 of their flavors are free of GMOs, preservatives, acids, artificial colors and sweeteners! They are vegan and contain just a tiny 10 calories and 2 grams of natural cane sugar. It’s the perfect blend of gentle flavors and replenishment!
Enter with the Rafflecopter widget below to win a case of NOOMA to try for yourself!
And for locals, join NOOMA for a Pre-Gate Run and Yoga practice at Cleveland Yoga Uptown this Sunday the 16th!
