crafty

life lately //

March 11, 2015 by Rachel 1 Comment

The last month has virtually flown by. It’s been a whirlwind of exhaustion, cold, fun, illness, and what was nonstop marathon training.

Here’s a recap of what we’ve been up to as of late:

CLE-BOT-2
1. It turns out my kid is afraid of giant plants. A few weeks ago Moosh and I went up to Cleveland to hit up the Cleveland Museum of Natural History… but the parking lot was full. I took that as a sign that we should find another place to explore. So we went to the Cleveland Botanical Gardens. I thought “Hey! This is a great idea!”

CLE-BOT3
And the gardens were absolutely stunning. There was just one teeny problem. Moosh was absolutely petrified of the plants. Heck, even the flowers. I think the size of the leaves and trees was what was scaring him. Either way, I of course, thought it was kinda funny. And then I was kinda frustrated that he didn’t want me to set him down to walk around. In fact, he clung to me so tight that when we got close to a plant, he squeezed his thighs around my hips and wouldn’t budge.

CLE-BOT-1

I laughed. All the older people who were there enjoying the gardens probably thought I was a bad mom. Oh well. 🙂

barrio-2
2. Lunch date at Barrio in Lakewood. Post-Botanical Gardens, we headed to Lakewood for some tacos with Grandma Dee (my aunt/Godmother). I was beyond happy to see that Barrio was now open for lunch. If there’s two things that Moosh and I can agree on, it’s fruity drinks (his non-alcoholic, of course) and cheese dip.

barrio1
Add in an empty restaurant full of staff who thought Moosh was the cutest thing ever? Day. Made. Totally makes up for his fear of gardens.

barrio-1
Also? Tacos. Yummy, yummy, tacos for the win. I’m definitely not mad that Barrio is open for lunch. Just sayin’.

3. Chocolate. Lots of chocolate. While I was in Lakewood I stopped by Sweet Designs (if you recall this is THE chocolatier that changed my views of chocolate forever). I nearly forgot that the next day was Valentine’s Day and that it would be crazy, but this mama was determined to get some (and by some, I mean a pound) of sponge candy! I may have also picked up a handful (or four) of other chocolate goodies for Chad and Moosh. What? It’s a once a year splurge! 😛

playdate
4. Play dates galore. Thank you, Café O’Play, for the neverending fun (and exhaustion)! We’ve been meeting up with friends for lunch and playdates as much as possible as of late. The new indoor play place near our house, Café O’Play has been an awesome go-to winter play place.

playdate1
Also? They had Ari’s hero come in for a visit while we were there — TINKERBELL! (Yes, our sons two heroes are Thomas the Tank and Tinkerbell. But for serious – have you seen the Tink movies!? Awesome!).

tink
5. Tumbling. Ari’s third (or is it fourth?) session of Wee Tumblers is officially over, complete with one final meltdown on the last day. We LOVE tumbling because it complete wears him out on a weeknight. Bonus? He has SO MUCH FUN. Who knew paddy cake would be the coolest thing ever?

family
6. Family time. Besides playdates, we’ve been soaking up time with each other. Ari has been a mega ham for the camera and, honestly, a little blogging break as of late, has done wonders for my marriage. I’ve been spending more time with Chad in the evenings after work. Just me + him (sure, sometimes me and him and Ari), hanging out on the couch before bed.

Mimi and Poppy have also been up to visit a few times as of late, so we’ve been spending as much time with them as possible before they trek back to Kentucky. Sometimes that even means hanging out on the floor by the fire. LOL. (Hence the picture above).

painting
When Moosh and I have our days off together I try to do fun things with him. When that isn’t visiting the (scary) botanical gardens, that usually means a day of crafts. Recently we went to paint pottery and his little crafty heart was so, SO, full! And so was mine

7. Just keep running. I’ve already announced that I’ve put marathon training on the backburner until Moosh is older; but that hasn’t stopped my aspirations to run and keep training. I will continue to run after a ten day break (doctors orders, per a fairly severe pulled muscle). All the running and (mostly) clean-eating has helped tremendously with my continued (slow, but steady) weight loss.

8. Sickies galore. Thanks to a seemingly extra-long and extra-cold winter, this mama has been fighting off everything under the sun for the last several weeks. And after just getting rid of a nasty stomach bug, I ended up in the ER the other day because I may have accidentally inhaled tiny particles of glass while I was cleaning up the shattered glass door to our entertainment center (#toddlers). Oops.

hospital
9. Buh-bye, Mercury in retrograde! I had never bought into the astrology thing before; but while mercury was in retrograde, we had a plethora of less than stellar things happen. In fact, we were overwhelmed. First, I was sick. Then, on my way to work, a tire blew out on my car. Four new tires later, Chad’s car breaks down… no brakes. We got sick again. Pretty much one thing after another after another. It was bad, but thankfully, things got better! Hooray hooray! PS. Right after my car started feeling like a new car (thanks, new tires), we actually bought a new car to replace Chad’s old car!

newcar
I’m kind of in love with the new car. I’ve promised to keep this car clean because, well, mine is NOT. Mine is a mess full of stuff from Moosh and food he’s thrown on the floor. It’s just… not pretty. But I’m determined not to get this beauty dirty.

10. We spent our second night EVER away from Ari. Big thanks to Mimi and Poppy for taking Ari for a night. We had our second ever night without him. It was… weird. But wonderful! We had our own little buffet of cheese and meats. And sparkly wine!

cheese2
I’m grateful that we had that time. But still, it really opened up our eyes that our family is really most complete when there are three of us under one roof. However, we need to make more times for moments like this, even if it’s just after Ari goes to sleep.

11. Yoga night with the MRTT ladies. I went up to Harmony Studios in Willoughby in the middle of a major snowstorm to take a yoga class made for runners with the Moms Run This Town Cleveland Chapter ladies!

mrttyoga
So yeah, we’ve been busy. Very busy. Sure, there are a few things that I would have liked to have not happened over the last couple of months. But honestly? We survived. And just like this weeks’ mantra stated — I’ll continue to survive. <3

Budget Friendly Valentine’s Day Date Ideas For Parents //

February 4, 2015 by Rachel Leave a Comment

Valentine’s Day takes on a much different feel when you are a busy parent. To be honest, Valentine’s Day is, and always has been, just another day. It’s especially easy to see it this way as a parent. Which is why this year it’s extra important to me to at least make this day a little bit special. It’s way too easy to get wrapped up in everyday life.

Here are 5 budget friendly Valentine’s Day date ideas with parents in mind:

itsahero_vday
1. Movie Date Night In. Put a firm time on the kids’ bedtimes for just this one night. Make it non-negotiable. Rent a Redbox movie and some popcorn from the local theater (you heard me — go into the theater just to get popcorn! Sure this seems silly; but it will make your at-home date feel a little bit more like an actual date); pick up your favorite fizzy beverage at the grocery store and head home for a movie-theater-esque date!

Honestly, we try and do this on the regular. We are both huge movie buffs and the addition of actual movie theater popcorn really make these nights feel more like dates. We used to go to the movies at least once a week; but since Ari was born we rarely make it.

2. Game Night. In fact, have a couple of friends that are new parents? Invite them over, too! Chances are there Valentine’s Day is going to be even more low-key than yours is planned to be. You can keep that tiny baby entertained while everyone plays a few rounds of Cards Against Humanity.

We very rarely have a chance to sit down and have fun together at home. When we’re home there’s always something that needs to be done; something that needs to be tended to; a child that needs your attention. Set it all aside for game night. Laugh with your spouse and your friends.

3. Canvas painting and wine session! One of my favorite things to do is go to wine and canvas painting classes. But those: 1. pricey; and 2. require a sitter. So create your own at home! All you need is a vision (which you can find instructional painting videos on YouTube), two canvases, some paint, and a bottle of wine. After the kids go to bed, you have your own studio set up!

4. Have an old-school video game match. Think Nintendo 64’s Wave Race or Mario Kart. Or even a Just Dance match! It’s a great way to challenge your spouse in a little friendly competition.

5. Cook a meal together and have a romantic late-night dinner. With intention. That’s the key. I don’t mean just cook dinner; cause as a busy parent that really just means rushing to feed your kid in the evening. Feed your kids, obviously; but after the kids are asleep, actually cook together — with purpose. Then, enjoy your delicious creation with a little living room floor picnic. No cell phones; no TV; no distractions. Just conversation and a good meal.

a much needed girls night // wine + canvas

January 27, 2015 by Rachel 1 Comment

Yesterday was downright awful in most ways. I was up all night Sunday with a stomach thing, courtesy of a gone-bad batch of sour cream (ugh). And then I spent the whole day with the bathroom door open + a toddler that kept yelling “Mommy – Osckie messy!” about the dog as I was incapacitated in the bathroom. (False alarm – the dog was fine. Turns out ‘Oscar messy’ meant that Ari just wanted to ‘clean’ Oscar with baby wipes. But there was definitely a moment of panic from the bathroom when I thought all hell had broken loose.)

Turns out all hell broke loose later. I had paid & registered for a local Wine + Canvas event, but I was feeling downright awful Monday morning. They require 48-hours advance notice for cancellations. So I went. But when I left the house (determined not to get sick), I got a flat tire. Like, right away. Insert major frowny face. I’m so over my car right now. Ugh.

I ended up taking Chad’s car to the wine + canvas event, but it put a serious damper on my evening.

wine
… and then I made a pretty picture.

I called my friend Cristin when I was running late and I asked her to please order me a glass of much-needed wine. The end result was this painting. I honestly couldn’t remember what painting we exactly agreed to paint, but I didn’t care at that point. It was a wonderful release. <3

So yeah, today I’ll be spending approximately $800 on tires; but ya know what? my husband + my friends rock in a major way. And so does being crafty. That is all, y’all. Happy Tuesday… cause it’s not Monday.

holiday wrap up! //

December 1, 2014 by Rachel Leave a Comment

[I feel the need to preface this post with two things: 1. Sorry for all the pictures; 2. Sorry all the pictures are of crappy quality. I’m tired]

Thank you to everyone who checked in with me over the last week or two. It’s been a rough couple of weeks, but I’m feeling so much better about everything since the holiday. <3

Wednesday when I (finally) got off of work, I came home to just relax. As I mentioned before, we cancelled our Thanksgiving plans to stay home. It was the first time in the seven years that Chad and I have been together that we have spent Thanksgiving alone. Well, alone meaning me + him + Moosh.

So we slept in until Moosh woke up on Thursday. And then we watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in our giant king sized bed (PS. it’s been a while since I’ve mentioned how much I LOVE our Sleep Number bed…. but it’s true. I love it so much). Moosh was completely entranced by the floats and characters.

thomas
Especially when Thomas the Tank Engine appeared around the corner. Just “CHOO CHOO! CHOO CHOOOOO!” nonstop. Freaking. Adorable.

tday1
We spent the rest of the morning lounging around. Literally. Parade + Ho Ho movies (which means Frozen + Saving Santa + Curious George Christmas) and spending time in our PJs. Perfection. No where to go; no where to be; nothing to do! Fantastic. We just cooked. Let’s be real. I didn’t cook. I just cleaned the green beans. Oh and I cleaned up after the real cook! Ha!

tday2
Our dinner was delicious. Chad made the turkey with the sous-vide. The mashed potatoes? Not potatoes at all… mashed cauliflower! Amazing cranberries & green beans. Oh. My. GOSH. So delicious.

tday5
Because our Thanksgiving was kind of last-minute, I didn’t plan for dessert. I ended up picking up a pie from The Blue Door Café. A delicious pumpkin pie with molasses crust!

tday6
It was incredible. After dinner when we were all struggling to stay out of a food coma, I decided to brave the Thanksgiving shopper crowds. First at Toys R Us, then at Target. I know, I know… I’m crazy. Luckily I wasn’t after any big items. Just some toddler toys for Moosh.

And honestly I had the BEST shopping experience ever. I usually hate going to Toys R Us. But, for whatever reason, the employees were incredibly helpful AND happy. I was in and out in no time at all!

tday7
And then… Target. I found my favorite Target pharmacist in the toy section just there to help out! Truth: The Target Pharmacy has the least convenient hours of any pharmacy ever; But they also have the most friendly and helpful pharmacists of all time. So I always go there for our prescriptions. And they make an effort to say hello when they see me outside of the pharmacy. Seeing a friendly face almost made the 30-minute wait to check out bearable. But in truth, I had no where else to be and I wasn’t in any sort of hurry. The most painful part of the line was the 20-something dude in front of me that commented on EVERY SINGLE ITEM he found in the aisles about how it “was on sale! Better buy it!” as he stood with his XBOX one game. I almost punched him in his childless, XBOX one playing face.

tday13
It’s hard to believe we packed that must awesome into one day. But we did. On Friday all I wanted to do was sleep in, but I was awake by 7AM. I almost crawled back into bed, but decided that since I was up, I had no excuse not to make it to a free yoga class at Lululemon. I’m so glad I went. It was just what my body (and my mind!) needed. Much love to Gretchen and the Lululemon crew for the amazing post-Thanksgiving burn!

tday8
In addition to the yoga, we went to the gym on Friday (while everyone else was busy working/shopping), and I went for a nice 3-mile run! It was a lovely day… minus the fact that Ari’s nasty cough came back and we had to use his nebulizer (his “Pup-pppeeee”). He’s become quite a champ at holding it himself.

We were all so exhausted by Friday evening that I ended up falling asleep before 8:30. Ha. But I had to get into work Saturday morning. (Yuck)

Luckily Saturday flew by. I came home to a happy baby and happy husband. Moosh and I played. And then the mister and I had an at-home date night, complete with red wine, The Maze Runner movie, and LOTS of cheese.

tday9
It was perfection. Complete perfection.

And Sunday was equally was awesome. We slept in until Moosh woke us up with his “Mommy??” over the monitor. And then we did more snuggling in bed while we watched Super Why.

tday10
This kid makes me SO happy! I was also lucky enough to meet up with my running partner for a nice 5 mile run on the towpath followed by an adventure with Moosh at Crafty Mart in Akron where we met up with Gretchen and her two boys!

tday12
tday11
Such a perfect perfect holiday. <3

weekend wrap up // Holiday Flea 2014

November 26, 2014 by Rachel Leave a Comment

This past week has been one of the most challenging weeks of my life (for reasons I’d prefer to not get in to). But this weekend something magical happened. I SURVIVED. Okay. So that may seem dramatic; but it’s true.

Friday Moosh and I had a playdate; but before we made it to our playdate we had errands to run and running to, well, run. So off to the gym we went! I better get used to that indoor track, because I have a LOT of miles to put in for training on that track.

Our playdate was fantastic. Moosh got to catch up with an “old friend,” while I caught up with her mommy, Emily! (We were in Bradley Method classes together and she happens to live just down the street). The rest of the day was spent in survival mode.

w1 And playing with trains. Obviously. Because that’s what having a toddler boy entails. Oh, and putting your cereal/snack in the trains and “driving” them all over the house. Real life, folks.

Saturday was business as usual. Which literally means business. Playing for Moosh. And more survival mode for me.

But Sunday was an entirely different story. Even though Moosh went to bed SUPER late Saturday night, he still ended up waking up at 6 AM Sunday (totally unlike him) screaming “MOMMY!!” at the top of his lungs. Totally, totally bizarre. So I brought him into bed with me for some extra snuggle (and hopefully sleep?) time. Which was totally cute. He lied down on my pillow and made me snuggle him close; he grabbed my face so it was against his; and it melted my heart.

… until he decided to leap off of the bed. Seriously. We have co-slept before and NEVER has he fallen off the bed. He was OK, just a bit shaken up. He told me he was scared (how freaking adorable).

So yeah. I ended up missing my group run(s). But it was worth it because it meant snuggle time with Moosh. And any day without an alarm is a good day. Even if that means being awoken by a screaming toddler.

Post-snuggling/falling off the bed, Moosh and I headed to the Cleveland Flea Holiday Market. I know I’ve talked about #TheFlea before, but this is NOT your moms flea market. No, no, no. It’s serious hipster business. And Moosh fits in like a boss. I’m fairly certain he was the only 2 year old in a baby-carrier (cause he still fits) wearing a fox hat.

holidayflea1 (Clockwise from upper left:

Moosh-wearing was fine by me because: 1.) It means serious snuggle time with him; 2.) It means I don’t have to chase him around a crowded market.

felt flower bouquets)It was the perfect afternoon of fun. We walked away with full bellies, full hearts, lots of hugs with vendor friends, and a few Christmas presents! Success!

When we (finally) made it home, Moosh went down for a nap-ish… That really means he talked to his toys in his crib. Ha. I happened to sneak in an unexpected run. I wasn’t going to go for a run, but decided at the last minute. It must have been perfect timing because as soon as I started I, quite literally, RAN into my friend Emily (THE Emily of Friday’s play date)! I so needed to run into her because she motivated me on a rather lackluster afternoon. I finished out her run with her and kept on going. Exactly what I needed at exactly the right time!

Easy Gluten-Free Pumpkin Donuts //

September 21, 2014 by Rachel 1 Comment

I’m going to admit something kind of serious… I’m a bit over Pumpkin Spice Lattes. And it has nothing to do with Food Babe’s “investigative” uncoverings… which I’ve known about for the last several years. It just doesn’t taste the same to me anymore.

That being said, I’m still all Team-Pumpkin. I love pumpkin flavored treats this time of year. And for whatever reason I’ve been desperately seeking a healthy-ish alternative to donuts. I realize that regardless of how you make it, a donut has sugar. And sugar isn’t healthy. But if you do it right, you can health-ify it a bit.

Enter the Easy Gluten-Free Pumpkin Donuts!

EasyGFPumpkinDonuts

EASY GLUTEN FREE
PUMPKIN DONUTS

1 Box/Bag Gluten-Free Yellow Cake Mix

1 Can Organic Pumpkin

Coconut Oil

Cinnamon/Sugar Mix
(I use Trader Joe’s

Pumpkin Spice

ingredients

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees (or 375* convection).

Mix, by hand, the cake mix and the organic pumpkin. Stir in 1 Tablespoon of Trader Joe’s Sugar, Chocolate and Coffee Bean Mix.
Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon & 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice.

Stir until mixed completely. Use coconut oil to grease donut pan.

donutpan1

Spoon mixture into 6-donut pan, halfway filling each mold.
Bake for 13 minutes in convection oven.

Test to see if donuts are done by gently pressing on one.
The donut consistency will be spongy and will bounce back.

They were a HIT in our house! Moosh loved them, but he loves everything. But Chad loved them, too! And that’s saying something! If you’re looking for a semi-guiltless pumpkin indulgence, try them out this Fall — or as we like to call it, Pumpkin Season! 😉
