Getting a Toddler to Eat // Easy Anywhere Pouches Review

March 12, 2015 by Rachel Leave a Comment

Confession: When Moosh was starting on solid foods, we spent a boatload of money on those organic baby food pouches for a couple of reasons: pouches are way more convenient than canned baby food; and also because we knew they were full of healthy ingredients. Next to making our own baby food, they were the best thing.

But, let me reiterate — they are crazy expensive — between $2 – $3 per pouch. PER POUCH! Some days Moosh would eat 5 (he was a hungry, hungry little dude).

Nowadays little man is eating all big people food, but our great eater has become increasingly picky as of late. I’ll try just about anything to get him to eat nutritious foods. He’s such a busybody toddler that he doesn’t want to slow down to eat.

The other day I mixed up some apples and bananas in the Vitamix and poured the mix directly into Easy Anywhere Reusable Baby Food Pouches. I had tried other reusable pouches previously and they all proved to be incredibly messy at filling. But in all honesty, I didn’t even have to break out a spoon. The pouches were wide enough to where I just held it open and poured the fruit mix in!

Moosh was deeply enthralled in an intense Jake and the Neverland Pirates episode while playing with his own pirate ship and choo-choo trains at the time. But I just walked in, handed him a full pouch, and he went to town.

itsahero_pouchreview
Hallelujah! The kid is eating actual food and not just crackers (his desired food of the moment – ha).

I loved the fact that I could see how much was left in the pouch (because low and behold he handed it to me saying “More please?” and I just had to push some up and tell him there was still more left. (Also? Mommy success! He asked for MORE!)

And of course the hippy-granola-chick in me loves that these are BPA, PVC, and phthalate-free AND easy to clean.

If you’re looking to snag a couple for yourself, head on over to Amazon here. You can get four for $12.99 with free amazon prime shipping.

So moms (and dads) — any other tricks up your sleeve for a “too-busy-to-stop-and-eat” toddler!? HELP!

Disclosure: I was selected to receive four pouches for my honest opinion and review of this product. The content and opinions expressed here are all my own. Thank you to Easy Anywhere for sponsoring this post.

Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts Review + Giveaway //

February 17, 2015 by Rachel Leave a Comment

In our house, we are always looking for new ways to get healthy, sustainable, protein and nutrient-packed superfoods in our diet. We eat chia seeds by the spoonful. Seriously.

Fueling our bodies for workouts (and just fueling for the day, in general) is majorly important. I’m learning this is especially important during marathon training. Yikes!

Enter Manitoba Harvest, the worlds largest hemp food manufacturer. They have a very small-business, farm-to-table sort of feel about them (which is very clear from their website, mission and values). There business isn’t just about a product; it’s about a philosophy of living healthy and promoting health and wellness.

hemp1
My first reaction was that the texture was a lot like quinoa. I decided to throw it on top of some salad I brought to work for lunch. When I went to eat it, I mixed up my salad and I could no longer even see the hemp hearts in my salad. Which, let’s face it — when it comes to supplementing your food with nutrients, sometimes less is more as far as flavor!

hemp_itsahero_salad
All of the nutritional goodies just by eating what I normally would eat! Yum-O! Perfection all around! And I’ve been incorporating it into my diet ever since.

Here are some fun facts from the Manitoba Harvest website:

Hemp seed naturally does not contain gluten. However, only one barley or wheat kernel amongst 50,000 hemp seed can potentially result in a positive test for gluten.

Instead of stating our products are gluten-free (which implies an absolute), you will see the following on our packages instead:

hempfoodfacility

All Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods’ products are Non-GMO Project Verified.

hemp-nongmo
Our products proudly do NOT contain additives or preservatives. It is absolutely crucial that packaging be light and air impermeable to protect hemp’s precious omegas and keep the product as fresh as possible.

We try to find the most sustainable, environmentally friendly packaging option that allows for Hemp Hearts and our hemp protein powders to still be protected. We choose pouches because over their lifecycle have 1/10th the impact of plastic canisters and although they are not recyclable, they can still be re-used numerous times.

You will also find that we do NOT include a plastic scoop in our packaging. Not only does everyone have a spoon at home, but we also wanted to reduce our carbon footprint by eliminating extra plastic in the environment.

And now for the fun part — one of my readers will win a package of Hemp Hearts to try out for themselves! Use the rafflecopter widget below to enter!

Ohio Blogging Association // December Meetup at TownHall

January 14, 2015 by Rachel Leave a Comment

Just before the holidays the Ohio Blogging Association celebrated it’s last meetup of 2014 with a visit to local Ohio City restaurant, TownHall.

The philosophy behind TownHall is definitely a philosophy I support — organic, sustainable, and locally sourced food. They offer an array of gluten free, vegetarian and vegan dishes — and all are delicious!

We learned that over the last year they have made it a goal to become 100% non-GMO. And as of just the other day, they have succeeded! They are now 100% non-GMO!

TH_NONGMO_ANNOUNCEMENT
Trust me, while I was there I certainly had some questions about this for the staff. Chad + I put a huge focus on consciously choosing our food from sources that are non-GMO when we can. ‘Cause let’s face it — there are somethings that are difficult to locate non-GMO. So serious props to Townhall and the staff for this huge accomplishment!

In addition to me grilling the staff on their non-GMO initiative, I promise I did taste a LOT of food.

Our meetup was on a Monday night, which happens to be both Vegan Night AND Craft Beer Monday (every Monday $3 for any of their 36 drafts from 6pm to close). Their craft beer list is extensive and impressive. And as a non-vegan, I can testify that meat-eaters will love their vegan offerings, too!

th4
We started our food journey with Black Bean-Quinoa Falafel Steam Buns (with pickled red onions and sriracha cucumber vegan aioli). So, so, good. I have to admit, I love steam buns; but these weren’t just any steam buns. The falafel and aioli packed a little bit of a kick, too!

th3
Next up was a gigantic Raw Vegetable Crudite Platter with White Hummus and Kalamata Olive Dip. That kalamata dip — heavenly. I could have licked the bowl clean. Really.

th5
My entrée of choice was the Kobe Steak + Potatoes (Rosemary fingerlings, portabella + roasted red pepper roll, with a balsamic reduction drizzle). It did not disappoint. I, for one, did not expect to be able to finish my meal. Let’s face it —  my eyes are always bigger than my stomach. But I dominated this kobe steak and potatoes. It is by far one of the best meals I’ve ever had.

I think most of us felt this way about our entrées because we were all silent. A large group of 20 or so outgoing bloggers not speaking!? That’s more outrageous than the idea of me finishing a meal! But it’s the truth.

I nearly forgot one of the coolest features of TownHall — you can take home any of their 36 draft beers in a 32-ounce Crowler, pressure sealed for freshness in an aluminum can! This is way cooler than any Growler I’ve seen. As the only one in my household that enjoys beer, a 64-oz growler is just not something one can (or should) tackle on their own! Ha!

th7
We ended our TownHall food adventure by stuffing ourselves to the max on a giant Skillet Cookie (chocolate chip cookie topped with Mitchell’s vanilla ice cream).

th6
At this point in the evening I was fairly certain I couldn’t eat another bite, but when Mitchell’s ice cream is presented to you literally on a platter, you eat it. That’s foodie rule #1 in my book: Never say no to Mitchell’s ice cream.

Other items of note about TownHall: In addition to the restaurant, they have a more laid-back side which features an Urban Cafe, complete with wifi and laptop accessibility. The menu is the same on the Urban Cafe side, but offers a more relaxed “on-the-go” versus sit and chat vibe. It also features a bean bar complete with artisan coffee offerings, as well as a juice bar!

th8
It was an awesome evening spent with awesome blogger friends. I’m so grateful to have these people in my life and to have ended 2014 with such a bang (and food coma)!

Making Your Home A Smart Home //

October 6, 2014 by Rachel Leave a Comment

energy
Winter is right around the corner. And fall rolled into town with full force this weekend. It got downright C-O-L-D! We pay close attention to our energy consumption year-round, but we pay extra attention during the winter.

Need help thinking of ways to make your home smarter and more convenient? Here’s a mixture of energy efficient and smart home ideas for you!

1. Install a smart thermostat, such as the Nest Learning Thermostat. Smart thermostats offer you climate control, the convenience of programming away from home, and more.

nest
2. Your living room typically has multiple active light sources available. Make sure your lighting is energy efficient by switching traditional bulbs to CFLs or LEDs. We switched all of the bulbs in our house out for CFLs/LEDs. Sure, they were expensive up front, but are a huge savings in the long run.

3. Replace your old, inefficient appliances with new, efficient, Energy Star® appliances. Old appliances tend to run inefficiently. And sure, it’s not exactly an inexpensive feat, but when you have the opportunity to switch them out, go for HE/Energy Star appliances.

4. Replace the showerhead in your bathroom with low flow showerheads. These showerheads regulate the flow of water, assuring you a more efficient shower. Plus, those rain-like shower heads are incredible.

5. Make sure you have a strong Wi-fi signal from your smart thermostat and smart devices. Because you can remotely control your smart thermostat via the internet, periodically check the signal strength in the network settings on the thermostat’s control screen.

6. Installing light dimmers can save cut your electricity use 40% over time and make your lightbulbs last 20 times longer.

7. Use an automated pet food and water dispensing system so you don’t have to worry about feeding your pets if you happen to be away from home for longer than you had intended.

8. Planting trees in optimal spots on your property will provide shade during the warmer months making your system work less hard to cool your home down.

9. Even when your appliances are turned off, they are still using electricity. Use smart power strips to combat energy vampires.

10. Use a smart sprinkler to control your sprinkler system from your smartphone. They adjust setting based on weather and time of day so you don’t have to.

Thank you Direct Energy for helping me learn how to make my home more energy efficient!

get fit!! // jump-starting the wheat belly diet

January 21, 2014 by Rachel 7 Comments

My husband has been super preachy with me about my love affair with carbs over the last year. Prior to my pregnancy in 2012, we ate very healthy. We would obviously have ‘cheat days’ — aka our Vegas trip — for special occasions. But overall, we ate clean, we ate healthy, and we rarely (if ever) got sick.

Then pregnancy — dun, dun dunnnnn!! Carbs were the one thing that staved off the nausea. And boy did I eat them! Postpartum it’s been hard to give them back up.

I love potatoes. LOVE them. I love french fries and baked potatoes. Heck, even the french fries can be baked! I just love the crap out of potatoes!!

And bread. Which is weird cause you will rarely find me eating a sandwich. But I will eat me some bread, man. Especially brioche. And challah. And other buttery, flakey goodness.

And sugars. Well, aren’t these all really sugars?? Yes. Yes, they are. But I also have a sweet tooth. I won’t eat your normal ‘junk foods,’ like Little Debbie. Nope. My tastes for all of these foods are really specific. Local artisan breads, local cookies from teeny bakeries in town, and, well, with the potatoes I’m a lot less picky. Ha! I’ll eat any potatoes from anywhere.

wheatbelly2

So after one self-indulgent weekend, I looked at Chad and said “OK, I’m all in.”

The Wheat Belly Diet is based on the premise that if you cut out the wheat, you’ll lose the weight.

Wheat creates an insatiable appetite for that cycle of blood sugar spikes that make a person crave wheat and go back to it time and time again.

Here’s an article on MindBodyGreen about the effects of Gluten and Wheat on the body.

wheatbelly3

So here’s what I can eat unlimited amounts of (eating ’til full):

  • Unlimited fresh or frozen veggies (excluding potatoes).
  • Raw nuts & seeds.
  • Healthy, unheated oils (such as coconut and avocado oil).
  • Red meat, pork, fish, chicken, turkey, eggs. We use consider free-range, grass-fed and/or organic sources.
  • Teas, coffee, water, unsweetened almond milk, coconut milk or coconut water
  • Real cultured cheeses only (no processed ‘cheeses’ like velveeta or singles).
  • Avocado, guacamole, and hummus.

I-heart-veggies

Here’s what I can eat limited amounts of:

  • Fruits are limited to 2 servings a day. Stay away from bananas and pineapples if possible because they are very high in sugar.
  • Real fruit juices (which is nice because I love fresh juice!). But it’s limited to about 4 oz.
  • 1 serving of any fat content milk per day.
  • Legumes, beans, peas.
  • Dark chocolate.

dark chocolate

And here’s what I’m not allowed to eat at all:

  • ”Gluten-free” foods made with rice flour, cornstarch, tapioca starch, or potato starch. Which is OK because we rarely eat anything with rice flour anyways. Chad ends up either grinding his own almond flour or using Bob’s Red Mill Coconut Flour!
  • Fried foods (womp womp = my beloved french fries! Ha!)
  • Fast food (which I never eat anyways).
  • Hydrogenated fats/oils.
  • Cured meats like hot dogs, sausages, and bacon with nitrates. (But Yay for nitrate free bacon! That’s what happens when you buy locally sourced and organic meats).
  • Anything with high fructose corn syrup.
  • Salad dressings.

Chad has been eating like this since the first of the year. I, on the other hand, am one week in. And in the last 7 days, I’ve lost 4 pounds!

I’ve eaten a lot of avocados (just plain – I know, I’m weird.), a lot of salads with chicken topped with homemade salad dressing (no yucky stuff!), raw/unsalted peanuts, pork chops, cheese and dark chocolate. And I didn’t have the opportunity to work out once during those seven days. Not once, and I lost 4 pounds! No joke.

I feel good. I feel really good actually. I had a moment of “Give me pizza!” Friday night. But I didn’t cave. And I’m so happy about that. It’s a long and slow process but I’m confident that this lifestyle change will produce amazing results for our family!

How We #TurnItGreen & Keep It Green in Our House!

January 17, 2014 by Rachel Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago I introduced you to Repreve, the company that uses recycled plastics and turns it into fibers for fabrics used in tons of awesome products like The North Face Denali jacket, Patagonia fleece products, and Ford uses the recycled fibers in their seats!

  220_a05fcad57fb962fa4ae294dc18c251f9

Buying products like this isn’t the only way we Turn It Green in our house. I’ve mentioned before that we’re a bit crunchy-granola in our house! Ha!!

We take the #TurnItGreen theme to a bit of an extreme in our house. Here are some ways we achieve this:

  1.  We eat almost entirely local and/or organic. It’s difficult to find both, but we tend to lean more towards local. It’s hard (and expensive) for small farmers to get USDA certified as organic, but most of the organic farmers we buy from farm without the use of harmful pesticides. And truthfully? I feel better eating bacon and hamburgers that I am confident are from hormone + antibiotic-free animals. :)Even when we go out to eat, we choose places that we know serve locally sourced, organic foods.
  2. We only use eco-friendly cleaners in our home. Method Products are my #1 go-to, but we also use Seventh Generation products, and Mrs. Meyers. There are sometimes rare occasions when we have to buy something to tackle the dreaded clogged drain, and that is not exactly eco-friendly (ha! not by a longshot!). And it totally breaks my heart. ABM_1389989699
  3. We recycle EVERYTHING. All boxes, cardboard, plastic, paper, etc gets recycled.
  4. We compost. (and here’s where I lose some of you! Ha!). Composting is actually easier than you might think! We bought a collapsible bin a couple of years ago and we use it consistently during the summer. Every biodegradable item that comes out of our house, goes into the compost bin! 1-hibiscus-and-fiskar-composter_width579
  5. We have changed all of the light bulbs in our house to compact fluorescent bulbs. It’s saves on our energy costs, but it also saves the environment!
  6. We shop for quality, not for price. I’m not saying this exclusively, but we do tend to purchase products that will last longer, even if they are a bit more expensive. Effectively, we are spending less over time and saving on resources!
  7. We use a push-reel lawn mower. Granted, our yard is not big. But using a push reel lawn mower saves us money on fuel, helps save the environment, and helps us get some exercise! 230931325_640
  8. We go green! With paper, that is! We’ve turned almost entirely to eBooks and we do all of our banking and bill electronically.

And remember that Repreve beanie I received?? Well, I’ve been wearing it as I run! And I uploaded an Instagram Video to the #TurnItGreen Contest!

My Repreve Video

And YOU can record your own short video and enter to win a cash prize! Here are the details:
