I need advice and help. Some of you may know that BF is watching my puppy, Oscar, this week for me. My apartment isn’t ready yet and my parents have been watching Oscar until it is ready for me to move in. My parents just left for vacation in South Carolina yesterday so I went to pick Oscar up last night and brought him with me to BFs.
BF has two cats. Both 7 years old.
Oscar is not really a puppy. He’s a 5-year-old cocker spaniel/cavalier king charles spaniel mix. He is very hyper. He is constantly acting like a crazy dog. Very excitable. Very, very friendly. He has never even come close to being aggressive. This is partially in thanks to moi (yes, I give myself credit when due). When he was a little guy, someone gave me a couple of awesome pieces of advice.
1. To avoid him having problems with people touching him, from day one, make it a point to hold his feet and play with his ears. Why? Because dogs often have issues with people pulling on their ears. Not this dog! Because I always touched his paws and ears, you could tug on them and not get a reaction.
2. Stick your fingers in his mouth. Why? Because then, at most, when he’s teething he will have something to chew on, but when they get older they won’t fear hands near their mouths. So true! When he’s playing (so at his most aggressive point) I could stick my hand/fingers in his mouth and he’ll literally spit them out.
But what I really need to know is, how do you integrate two kittens with a hyper dog? Is it possible? What can I/should I do? I’m desperate for advice. Please enlighten me!

Oh I wish I had advice for you!
But hey thanks for your comment on my post on BBL. Yah…I was pretty disappointed when I found that picture of D.Sawa. hahaha
I got nothing for you girl! I have never been a pet owner..
wish i could help you! i have a doggie, but never any cats (i'm allergic) so i'm not sure how to get the two to get along.
hope you figure it out (he's a cutie!).

I have a Yorkie and I used to have a cat(became VERY allergic to her and had to give her away). Your best bet is to introduce them slowly. Are they young kittens? or are they cats? If they're kittens just let the dog in the room with them and let them do the introducing; the kittens will probably be afraid for a bit but will get over it. If they're cats, you should have the dog confined, and let the cats explore the dog. Let them go to the dog in their own time.
When I had first gotten my cat, she hid for a few days around the dog, but then by the time I had to give her away, they were sleeping together. I actually ended up getting another dog so that my Yorkie wouldn't be so lonely (because she was depressed without the cat)
Good luck! Just take it slow!!
Hmm, i really don't have any advice about the cats since I don't have any and won't know how they'll react but great tips about the dogs. Thanks! 🙂
I have a super crazy little bugg (boston terrier/pug mix) and she has never been around cats, but two people have watched her for me before who had cats. We just let them get use to each other, Katy (my dog) only chased them for a minute before she realized the kitties would kick her butt. She still chased them once in a great while, but most of the time they just ignored each other. Try not to worry, it will all work out
We had this situation with my cat and my sister's puppy a few years ago. Honestly, they just got used to each other. It took about a week, but once they learned to co-exist it was fine.
Thanks for your comment yesterday, I'm not in Syracuse yet, but once I am we'll definitely have to check out a Zumba class!
Honestly, i didnt read the other comments so ignore this if you've heard it.
We always had new cats around our out of control dog. The cats are not the ones you should be worried about. Cats can hold their own. They have claws and if the dog is getting too fresh they will just whack it in the nose. The dog will learn. Then they will get along just fine.
At least I hope this is how your animals are! Good luck!
When we brought Baxley home (he was 8 weeks old) our cat Fritz hated him. Fritz was always an only pet so it was a big adjustment. My advice would be to keep them in separate rooms and let them smell each other through a door for a while. Then slowly bring them together for short periods of time always with supervision. Soon enough they will learn to tolerate each other. Baxley & Fritz even sleep by each other at times now. 🙂 Good luck and let us know how it goes. 🙂 XOXO
Ohhhhh… puppy. I did not get custody of my pup (a blond Cocker Spaniel) because I was the one leaving the house with the yard & moving into an apartment. And I was the one who works days instead of nights. And whatever. I was the same way with Casey though. I handled him from day one. He still hated having his feet touched–he was ticklish! LOL–but he'd allow it unless you started to mess with the fur between his pads, at which point he would huff & puff & move away from you. (Couldn't really blame him since I kick if someone tickles my feet too!) Anyway, I look at it this way: cats can get to places pups can't. They will avoid him & get to know him on their own terms. I think as long as they have a place they can get to that he can't, they will all be just fine.
