Yesterday marked the 10-day countdown until the Akron Marathon — my first ever half marathon race! I’m officially a nervous wreck! Especially after last week — I pulled a muscle in a serious way. Like, it’s preventing me from walking normal. So I haven’t fit a run in (short or long) in a WEEK. I will likely not get a run in before the big race.

Looking for advice from runners on two things:

1. How do I calm my pre-race day nerves?

2. How do I recover from an injury in time for the race?

    I’m not a runner, but I’ll give you my tips pre-tennis match…

    1. You’re nervous – congratulations! That means you care and that’s a good thing. That means you WANT to be there. Acknowledge that you care, then realize that everyone else around you is there to do the same thing. Now with tennis, what’s the worst that can happen? You lose. In running a race? You don’t finish. A bummer, but not the end of the world. But, likely, you’re going to finish. So go out, do your best. You’re doing this to have fun.

    2. According to our Sports Health peeps, rest, ice, compression and elevation. You won’t lose too much cardio in one week. Do what you can without over doing it and then RICE, RICE, RICE. Stretch. You’ll feel much better to rest up, then to run a 1/2 on a hurt leg.

You are ready for this. You’ve done everything you can. Let go and run your booty off!

…and tell your husband to play tennis. 🙂
