{ Writer’s Workshop: Father’s Day }

June 14, 2012 by Rachel 6 Comments

This Sunday will be the first Father’s Day in our household. Well, the first soon-to-be-Father’s Day! And I know that we’re technically not parents yet, but my very loving husband has taught me a lot about our pending parenthood over the last few months.

He’s taught me that becoming a parent is scary, but exciting when you have a loving and supportive partner.

He’s taught me that love is something that can happen overnight. Literally. When we found out we were (very unexpectedly) expecting, I was terrified that Chad would be as terrified as me. But when I was in a moment of “oh crap” panic, he was beaming and instantly in love with the new direction our lives were heading in.

And he’s taught me that Baby L doesn’t have to be born yet to know that being a parent is something he was born to do. And I’m certain that together we will make a really great team.

the most wonderful time of the year.

September 30, 2010 by Rachel 16 Comments

How I know my favorite season is here:

1. Pumpkin everything. And. I. Love.it.

2. I no longer am getting funny looks for wearing 3 layers of clothing. Note: People do not think cardigans are appropriate summer attire.

3. We are five days away from my birthday. Yep, the big 2-6 is upon us!

4. I don’t recall the leaves changing color, but suddenly fallen leaves are all over our yard.

5. I want to do nothing more than cozy up with BF near the fire and watch awesome Fall TV, like Glee. Another sidenote: Holy heck I love that show.

6. We are thisclose to my fave holiday, Thanksgiving. Which means I am inches from going to Denver for the first time for Thanksgiving.

7. Football is back and the Bills are still losing, and I still love them. And I know have an excuse to drink beer and eat hotdogs on a Sunday again. Win!

8. Chili and amazing breads are back to being a staple in our diets.

9. Gray skies: they are just comforting this time of year.

10. Marking the anniversary of another year with BF. Yes, this just got a little cheesy. And now it’s done.

writer’s workshop :: that day

March 18, 2010 by Rachel 16 Comments

I often find myself just staring at BF in admiration. Never in my life did I think I could or would love someone this much.

During these moments of adoration, the same thought is always running through my mind… How did I get this lucky? Never did I imagine that WE would be here, together, like this. Never.

Because it was so hard for me to imagine this point in my life, I am always asking BF about our first date. Specifically, I like to hear his point of view on the night.

I remember it vividly. I replay those first moments over and over again in my head. We had the most amazing dinner and the most amazing conversation. The food was incredible. But I was too nervous to eat any of it {so I took a to-go box & I downed it in the car on my way home from our date! – ha!}. We laughed and laughed and laughed.

He drove me back to my car. We talked outside for about an hour. I wanted him to kiss me. He didn’t {he would tell me on our second date that he wanted to kiss me, but didn’t want to break his “I don’t kiss on first dates rule”}.

I still remember the butterflies I had for days and days after that.

I never imagined that it would have lasted this long. The butterflies are still here. & they are here to stay. But I love thinking back to when it all started.

Inspired by the prompt “If you had to relive a day in your life what day would it be?” from Mama Kat’s Writers Workshop.

{writer’s workshop – a difficult conversation}

March 4, 2010 by Rachel 16 Comments

This isn’t easy to say. You know, sometimes I think you’re too hard on yourself.

Truthfully, I think almost all of the time most of the time you are too hard on yourself. It’s not easy for me to tell you this, but you’ve really got to just let some things go and let them happen. As badly as you’d like to, you cannot control everything.

And you know you are a control freak.

I know you’ve been struggling lately with the whole not being able to work out thing. You seem to be really down, but don’t be! This isn’t the end of the world. You should know that. It’s simply a temporary roadblock. And your safety and health should be most important, not your outward appearance.

So just relax.

Don’t stress.

Breathe.

Let. It. GO.

Someone needs to tell you this, so it might as well be me. I’ll be the bad guy and say the things that no one else wants to say, and the things you refuse to admit.

xoxo,
Yourself

This letter to myself has been inspired by the prompt: A difficult conversation.

winter to do list.

January 21, 2010 by Rachel 9 Comments

Let’s face it. Winter won’t be over for quite some time. We’ve got quite a few more months of dreary weather and anticipation of warmer months. So here’s a list of things that you can keep yourself busy with during these long winter months.

1. Read my blog, of course! And if you’re new around itsahero.com, go to my archives.

2. Watch all of the good movies that are out on DVD right now: Star Trek (don’t judge), Food Inc, Transformers 2, Weeds Season 5 (the new season will be starting before you know it–so catch up while you can!).

3. Eat Lucky Charms for dinner (What. This is a completely acceptable meal. Either breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Especially when there is too much snow to go to the store).

4. Browse etsy.com for amazing finds. And for ideas. Get crafty, people!

5. Research ways you can get involved in the community. Seriously. There are plenty of things to do, you just have to find them! Trust me. I know. I’ve looked. And I’ve found.

6. Get out of your comfort zone. So many of us are fine with staying indoors, hanging out with the same toxic people, doing the same things. Don’t be. Change it up. You can meet some great people on Twitter. Like these great people (Thanks Syracuse Twitter community!).

7. Get savvy at saving money. How? There are plenty of ways to research how to get the best bargains online. That way you’ll have plenty of money saved for the fun summer months! And there are some great frugal bloggers! Check out Fabulously Broke In The City (my personal fave).

8. Bake some goodies! & give them away to family and friends who will enjoy them.

9. Read, read, read. Go back and reread the classics. Check out bestsellers. Just read.

10. And last but not least… Workout. Take a yoga class. Hit the gym. Definitely want to stay active during the winter months.

writer’s workshop :: kindness of strangers

December 10, 2009 by Rachel 14 Comments

Tuesday night I was on my way to the Junior League of Syracuse holiday party at Pascales downtown and thanks to my handy dandy new GPS, I found my way!

I found a free parking space (cause what’s better than free, right?), and got out of the car.

I started walking. I decided to call BF on my walk to the restaurant downtown where the party was being held.

and I continued walking…. next thing I know… “Umm… where AM I?” I didn’t know. I told BF “I think I’m lost in a bad area… walking.” I knew there was nothing he could do. But I needed him.

And then there were many a groups of sketchy people. I mean, if there is ONE street in Syracuse that people saw “ohhh, don’t go down there” well I was walking there! Alone. At night. By myself. Carrying my pretty new purse with only 20 dollars in cash. And I was scared.

A bus stopped. I took I risk. I ran on to the bus stop and asked a man who was getting off “where is Pascales?”

He looked at me and said “You are FAR from there! Honey, I’ll walk you there!”

I believe in the power of good people! He knew I was alone and vulnerable. He walked me all the way to the restaurant. How incredible!

It’s so nice to see a completely stranger go out of their way for you. It rejuvenated my belief in the kindness we owe each other as human beings. So if you remember nothing else this holiday season (and all year long, really) I hope you remember that random strangers will appreciate your kindness. We owe each other that much, right?

{4. Describe a time or moment when a stranger helped you.}
