post-holiday blues //

January 13, 2015 by Rachel 4 Comments

I know darn well I’m not alone with the post-holiday blues. As stressful as Christmas can be, there is also so much hustle, bustle and genuine cheer, it also does a good job of compounding the stress.

And then, January. Dreaded, dreaded, January.

realwinter
After New Years it seemed like the weather got the memo and turned bitter cold and snowy, making daily commutes and tasks that much less enjoyable. Ugh. Throw in daycare drop offs and pick ups, layering clothes, and trying to fit in workouts. That pretty much equals a recipe for disaster. At least for some of us.

Yuck.

I know I’m not the only one who feels this way; I know that many of us suffer from the post-holiday blues… or Seasonal Affective Disorder. I’ll admit it. I’m there. I’m full-on in need of a happy lamp. In fact, I bought a groupon for a tanning salon. Yeah, yeah… I know it causes wrinkles, and normally I avoid it. But I also need a boost of endorphins.

But that’s not going to solve it all. That’s not going to fix the fact that this time of year is rough. Brutal, in fact.

But I don’t have a solution; I don’t have a cure. I just have solace. Solace in knowing that I’m not alone; that there are many other people who feel the same way; that we all need to support each other and lift each other up during these next few months. Solace in knowing that this time of year won’t last forever. I just need to stick it out — we just need to stick it out — and it will pass.

The holidays were fun. But take the next couple of months one day at a time. Find something that brightens those gray days — like tanning, working out, or anything that brings you a teeny bit of joy. And just wait for the sunshine.

what a weekend.

March 5, 2012 by Rachel 9 Comments

Well my parents are officially no longer living in Ohio. Now they are residents of the state of Kentucky.

And my sister and I decided to take my two pups on a little road trip from Akron to Kentucky to help them get settled.

We left early-ish Friday. And I really didn’t think I was going to survive the day.

About 25 minutes into Kentucky, it went from sunny to huge hail. And high winds. And a call from my parents telling us there were tornado warnings. And I lost it.

I called Chad and was hysterical. He directed us to get off the road and take shelter. Luckily there was an exit coming up with two gas stations. We pulled in and stayed in the car, but the hail was dangerously large.

I was worried if we stayed in the car, we weren’t going to be safe for long. But I couldn’t even begin to think of leaving the pups in the car. So in the midst of a full-on panic attack, I hang up on Chad, run into the gas station and, hysterically beg them to allow us and my two small dogs to take shelter inside their station {along with the 35+ people who have already taken shelter inside}. They said no. We had to stay outside.

I sprint back to my car, tell my sister we have to get out of the car — now! We stand directly next to the door of the gas station. I told my sister that if we saw anything headed our way, we were taking the dogs inside the station. Regardless of what they said.

We called Chad; we called our parents {who hung up on us because they had to run to take shelter themselves}; and every phone call dropped because of the storms. The skies were black, red, and yellow all at the same time. And the hail and wind would not stop. The power went out. The dogs were screaming {have you ever heard a dog scream? Much like a childs’ scream; but not at all like a dogs’ bark}. I was trembling. And Chad is stalking the weather online from Akron and reporting the play by play to me. And then the wind picked up and the electricity went out.

A local happened to be standing outside the gas station with us {and I swear he stayed only because he saw two girls having anxiety & panic attacks. While we were standing there, crying and trying to calm the pups down, he said he got a text that a tornado touched down just down the street.

We weathered the storm for 30 minutes before we were given the go-ahead from Chad to start driving again. We drove the hour or so further to Louisville and pretty much collapsed.

We later found out that pretty tornadoes were pretty much surrounding us & our travel path of going south down interstate 71. We were lucky to have stopped when we did.

And I’m pretty sure I’m still not recovered from being so shaken up.

September 13, 2010 by Rachel 2 Comments

Hello, new week! My weekend was not nearly as laid back and relaxed as I thought it would be, but I still had a blast!

A few things I will be looking forward to this week:

– going to $5 movie Monday..

– practicing yoga at Cleveland Yoga.

– enjoying the beautiful fall-like weather.

– spending every spare minute with the pups and BF

– being smart with my sleep schedule this week!

– being one week closer to the new season of Glee!

weekend plans? no plans = perfection

February 26, 2010 by Rachel 12 Comments

Thank Goodness It’s Friday {even though I’m snowed in and BF can’t make it up this weekend as planned. not that I’m complaining. Kind of.}

Like every week, this week has had it’s challenges. I’m still restricted from the gym, which has been insanely difficult. And last night we got slammed with snow. Like pretty much seven inches by the time I got home from work {and a foot & a half overnight last night}. But that turned out to be the least of my worries because Oscar puppy had an accident in the house {for the record, this is not at all like my little angel, so I fear something may be wrong with him. Fourth time in 6 weeks. I’ve made an appointment with a vet later today. hope my little man gets better.}.

After I cleaned up the mess, I went downstairs to battle the snow shovel my walkway and driveway. For those who don’t live in the arctic that is known as Syracuse places that get tons of snow, you may not be familiar with the kind of snow that is super wet and heavy. This kind of snow? Not my friend. I shoveled the seven to eight inches of snow on my walkway {just to get to my driveway} but I wasn’t getting anywhere.

In comes my newest hero… my neighbor, with his snow blower, to save the day. What would have taken me {literally} hours to do, and he just did it in 3 minutes. I’m so grateful to the kindness of people. For real.

Now that I’m sure I’ll be mostly snowed in this weekend, I have planned to do much of the following:

Sleep.

Watch movies. {on my to watch list: Law Abiding Citizen & Jesus Camp}

Pack up my belongings into boxes. {I dread this, but it must be done!}

Sleep more. {this is obviously a given}

Take care of Oscar puppy {this includes a lot of playing and snuggling}.

Read both books & blogs.

Bake some treats for my kind neighbor who cleared my driveway.

Talk to BF via Gmail video chat. {next best thing, I suppose}

Take a nice, long, relaxing, Lush Bath Bomb bath. {note: my new place doesn’t have a tub! must use these bath bombs quickly!}

So what are your weekend plans, kids?

true story.

February 23, 2010 by Rachel 11 Comments

I can’t wait for the Syracuse Tweetup this Thursday! I always have so much fun with the Syracuse tweeps!

True story.

Syracuse is supposed to get hit with a few large storms this weekend. I’m really not looking forward to it.

True story.

This would normally be BFs weekend to visit, but he has to work in Ohio, so I’m a lot little bummed.

True story.

But this will give me some more time to pack for my move in a few weeks.

True story.

The Bachelor is hilarious. Not in a “I hope they get married & live happily ever after” kinda way, but in a “these stupid, stupid, girls!” kinda way.

True story.

I finished Mad Men Season 1 last weekend and now I understand what all the fuss is about! What an awesome show! I love it and Netflix will be sending me season two shortly.

True story.

Oscar likes to sit/lay/sleep on top of my clothes when I’m packing (see picture) so it should be fun to pack all of my things up for the new place {please note the sarcasm}.

True story.

crossing my fingers…

December 16, 2009 by Rachel 16 Comments

I’m not trying to be a scrooge this holiday season. Sometimes it just happens.

This year is different. I have to travel back to Ohio on Christmas Eve this year. This could be a huge problem if the weather conditions are right (or wrong, depending on which way you look at it). If the weather is bad, I fear I will have to spend Christmas alone — something I have never done.

Many people have said, “you can spend Christmas with my family if that happens,” and, no offense, but I really only want to spend Christmas with my family. Thanks for your offers, but I really need to just be with family for the holidays (and by family, I mean BF–he is my family).

I know that worrying about the weather over a week in advance is not going to do me any good, but the thought of being stranded on Christmas Eve is overwhelming. And I am doing my best to arrange to get out of work early on Christmas Eve (which would put me back in Ohio around 6pm instead of midnight).

So if y’all wouldn’t mind, could you send me some positive vibes over the next week? And cross your fingers for good weather? I would appreciate it immensely!
