totally awkward tuesday

totally awkward tuesday – what the yiff?!?

July 14, 2009 by Rachel 16 Comments

This weeks edition of Tova’s Totally Awkward Tuesday – What the Yiff?!?

On our random day-trip to Pittsburgh we came across something odd. Alright, let me set this up for you: we arrive in Pittsburgh after a two-hour drive. We go to Ikea. After trying to get out of Ikea (didn’t realize we would get lost winding through the seemingly never-ending store) I was so hungry for a giant sandwich! So we headed to downtown.

I’m blabbering on and on to BF (as usual) about how I think one of my favorite Showtime shows was set in Pittsburgh (anyone know which show I’m talking about? :).

“Uh huh, uh huh,” he says, obviously half-caring about my nonsense. When all of a sudden he says “Is that girl dressed like a cat?”

“What?” I say, “No way. You’re crazy.”

I semi-ignored his silly comment and continued on with my story about Liberty Ave.

That was until I saw a dude with a furry tail.

Then. It. Hit me.

Someone at work had once told me that they were involved in a role playing fetish. This sex fetish is done in full on animal costumes. It turns out Pittsburgh throws some sort of conference or party for these fetish-goers once a year, in July. I had forgotten that Pittsburgh was some sort of yiffing (yes, look that up in google) safe-haven.

So then not only did I have to explain what it was, but then I had to tell BF how exactly I knew this piece of information. SUPER. 😛

totally awkward tuesday – he’s been there for three days

July 7, 2009 by Rachel 15 Comments

I almost forgot about this weeks installment of Tova’s Totally Awkward Tuesday.

I have a bad little habit. Technically, I don’t even know that it exists. I only know that it exists because other people have told me so.

So what is it? I talk in my sleep. Not just a few mumbles. Full. On. Chit-chat.

When I wake up in the morning, I don’t even realize that these conversations have taken place. About 5 years ago I received a call on my cell phone in the middle of the night. I answered. And apparently all conversation pointed to normal.

That was, until, I blurted out “The Presidents on my stomach.”

To which the caller responded “Excuse me?”

Followed by me, explaining, “The presidents on my stomach. He’s been there for three days!”

When I was told this the following morning I burst into laughter (and slight humiliation).

I’m just not a huge fan of having random convo’s in my sleep that I don’t remember. That’s all.

Totally Awkward Tuesday: going to hell

June 30, 2009 by Rachel 15 Comments

Today’s Totally Awkward Tuesday post is a mixture of an extremely awkward situation for me, and a post about something y’all have asked me about in previous posts.
So to give you a little background on myself, let me begin by saying I am not a religious person. It’s not that I am anti-religion in any way, I just am not a religious person. I hope that this does not bother you and I hope not to offend anyone. I am who I am. I’m not going to tell you that I am “spiritual” because that would be a little too cliche for me. I have, however, become comfortable with who I am and where I am at.

I was raised Roman Catholic. I was very involved in my church growing up and even into my college years. But for reasons that shall remain personal to me and not be posted on this blog, I no longer attend or associate with any religious sect. It’s personal and I am not trying to offend anyone. Promise.

{Tree Tattoo: located on the inside of my right arm}

{Strength: located on the inside of my left wrist}

{Voice: Inside of my right wrist}

{Leaves on my feet!}

So, anyways, I have always been very careful at separating my personal life from my work life (ehh, maybe I haven’t always been careful, but this is def something I have learned along the way and watch very closely now. Lessons learned). But last August my company paid our department to go on a team building outing (two of our departments were merging and they thought this would be a great way to bring us all together). We went on a picnic, complete with volleyball, kickball and a canoe trip. I had to come into work for a few hours prior to the outing to work on some crucial projects. After I had finished my couple hours of work, I decided to change in the bathroom located on our main floor of the building.

It was an excruciatingly hot day. Like, 98 degrees or something ridiculous (OK, for Ohio that is very ridiculous). Per our management team, shorts and a tank top were completely acceptable at this event. My department was full of mostly women. The other department (a techie group) was full of mostly men. Though I was hesitant, I changed into something I knew I would be comfy in: sports shorts and a racer back tank.

I walked out of the bathroom and was greeted by two women I work with. They happen to be two women I have to train. They approached me about my tattoos, which isn’t necessarily out of the ordinary. People ask me about them all the time (hence the reason I included pictures when referring to them this time!). But then they blurted out “Jesus hates your tattoos.”

I just stood there.

In shock. And smiled. Because I didn’t know what to say. But I was enraged. I had never had someone so blatantly tell me what was on their mind. And it was hurtful. And I am not a hurtful person, so I didn’t even mumble a rebuttal. And I walked away and got very upset that someone would even say that.

How awkward they made me feel that I would have to continue working with them after making comments like that!

To top off the awkwardness of the day, during our outing someone was taking photographs for the department website. I thought nothing of it… until I actually SAW the pictures. There are pictures of everyone from the outing… but during the game of kickball (where I had to round the bases ONCE) there were pretty much 30 pictures of me rounding the bases… in a tanktop… and, yeah. Umm… awkward. LOL.

Hope you enjoy. it was awkward even to write about. 😛

Tova’s Totally Awkward Tuesday – LOL

June 23, 2009 by Rachel 8 Comments

In honor of today’s Totally Awkward Tuesday post, I give you… my humiliation!

I have a habit of sticking my rather tiny foot into my mouth (it fits perfectly). I’ve developed quite a habit of using text lingo in real life. As if this isn’t annoying on it’s own, what this text lingo signifies are things I don’t actually say. Like LOL. Who actually says “Laugh out loud?” No one. Right? Right.

Well I was in a meeting with my supervisor, another supervisor, and my manager and I was expressing my dissatisfaction with the way a particular situation was playing out. They were intrigued at my argument. I was really helping my cause.

Until… I let out a “WTF.” Yep. I said it. WTF. Very rarely would I ever actually say what WTF stands for, and definitely not in the presence of this particular company. So, naturally, I was mortified. Did I really just let out a WTF? Really… I couldn’t have, right? Wrong. Oh, sooo wrong.

Face = bright red. Me = stumbling to recover. They seemed to blow it off, but I’m pretty sure my argument was then thrown out the window.

Oh well. I still have a job and that’s enough to be thankful for!

totally awkward tuesday, take 1.

June 16, 2009 by Rachel 6 Comments

I’m participating in Tova’s Totally Awkward Tuesday! Read about the theme and play along at her blog!

So here’s my most recent awkward story.

So yesterday I was in the ER (click here to read about that) at a local hospital. When the nurse brought BF and I to my room, she asked me to please go get a urine sample. Not a big deal, right? Well, I should preface this by telling you that I have some other health issues. For the last two years they have been trying to figure out what is causing me to have sever stomach pain. It seems like every time I eat (like eat anything) it makes me feel like I am going to throw up. Gross, I know, right?

So anyways, I also happen to be at that age where if I feel sick, someone around me asks “Are you pregnant??” and I always so NO WAY! Deep down I know that I am not pregnant. I take my pill everyday at the same time and I just know that it is my stomach acting up (because it can). It’s something about a female in her twenties that signals to other people “Extremely Fertile” and makes them want to bug you about it. So, even though I’m just know that I’m not, I will take a test anyways (people get into my brain and plant bad thoughts! LOL).

Well, I’ve had some more stomach issues and the new hire that I am training planted that thought in my head. I brushed it off and told him to stop picking on me, and tried to play it off like I didn’t care that he was picking on me. But yesterday when I had to pee in that cup, I started to think “uh oh.”

My dad was on his way to meet BF and I at the ER and the last thing I need is to find out “surprise!” in front of my dad. It would be enough for BF and I to handle and have to digest without Dad being around for it. Totally, completely… awkward. Well after they ran a lot of tests on me, the nurse came back into the room. I was laying in the bed, my dad was sitting down and BF was standing up next to me. The nurse says “Well we didn’t find anything on the EKG, your blood work is fine, and you’re not pregnant.” Just like that. So nonchalant.

No one budged. I hated the nurse at that moment for even bringing it up. I wasn’t there for a pregnancy scare or anything. Do they test for it? Sure, but no need to bring it up like I was concerned.

So this is my totally awkward tuesday, first edition. Enjoy my awkwardness… at least someone should.
