get fit!! // jump-starting the wheat belly diet

January 21, 2014 by Rachel 7 Comments

My husband has been super preachy with me about my love affair with carbs over the last year. Prior to my pregnancy in 2012, we ate very healthy. We would obviously have ‘cheat days’ — aka our Vegas trip — for special occasions. But overall, we ate clean, we ate healthy, and we rarely (if ever) got sick.

Then pregnancy — dun, dun dunnnnn!! Carbs were the one thing that staved off the nausea. And boy did I eat them! Postpartum it’s been hard to give them back up.

I love potatoes. LOVE them. I love french fries and baked potatoes. Heck, even the french fries can be baked! I just love the crap out of potatoes!!

And bread. Which is weird cause you will rarely find me eating a sandwich. But I will eat me some bread, man. Especially brioche. And challah. And other buttery, flakey goodness.

And sugars. Well, aren’t these all really sugars?? Yes. Yes, they are. But I also have a sweet tooth. I won’t eat your normal ‘junk foods,’ like Little Debbie. Nope. My tastes for all of these foods are really specific. Local artisan breads, local cookies from teeny bakeries in town, and, well, with the potatoes I’m a lot less picky. Ha! I’ll eat any potatoes from anywhere.

So after one self-indulgent weekend, I looked at Chad and said “OK, I’m all in.”

The Wheat Belly Diet is based on the premise that if you cut out the wheat, you’ll lose the weight.

Wheat creates an insatiable appetite for that cycle of blood sugar spikes that make a person crave wheat and go back to it time and time again.

Here’s an article on MindBodyGreen about the effects of Gluten and Wheat on the body.

So here’s what I can eat unlimited amounts of (eating ’til full):

  • Unlimited fresh or frozen veggies (excluding potatoes).
  • Raw nuts & seeds.
  • Healthy, unheated oils (such as coconut and avocado oil).
  • Red meat, pork, fish, chicken, turkey, eggs. We use consider free-range, grass-fed and/or organic sources.
  • Teas, coffee, water, unsweetened almond milk, coconut milk or coconut water
  • Real cultured cheeses only (no processed ‘cheeses’ like velveeta or singles).
  • Avocado, guacamole, and hummus.

I-heart-veggies

Here’s what I can eat limited amounts of:

  • Fruits are limited to 2 servings a day. Stay away from bananas and pineapples if possible because they are very high in sugar.
  • Real fruit juices (which is nice because I love fresh juice!). But it’s limited to about 4 oz.
  • 1 serving of any fat content milk per day.
  • Legumes, beans, peas.
  • Dark chocolate.

dark chocolate

And here’s what I’m not allowed to eat at all:

  • ”Gluten-free” foods made with rice flour, cornstarch, tapioca starch, or potato starch. Which is OK because we rarely eat anything with rice flour anyways. Chad ends up either grinding his own almond flour or using Bob’s Red Mill Coconut Flour!
  • Fried foods (womp womp = my beloved french fries! Ha!)
  • Fast food (which I never eat anyways).
  • Hydrogenated fats/oils.
  • Cured meats like hot dogs, sausages, and bacon with nitrates. (But Yay for nitrate free bacon! That’s what happens when you buy locally sourced and organic meats).
  • Anything with high fructose corn syrup.
  • Salad dressings.

Chad has been eating like this since the first of the year. I, on the other hand, am one week in. And in the last 7 days, I’ve lost 4 pounds!

I’ve eaten a lot of avocados (just plain – I know, I’m weird.), a lot of salads with chicken topped with homemade salad dressing (no yucky stuff!), raw/unsalted peanuts, pork chops, cheese and dark chocolate. And I didn’t have the opportunity to work out once during those seven days. Not once, and I lost 4 pounds! No joke.

I feel good. I feel really good actually. I had a moment of “Give me pizza!” Friday night. But I didn’t cave. And I’m so happy about that. It’s a long and slow process but I’m confident that this lifestyle change will produce amazing results for our family!

How We #TurnItGreen & Keep It Green in Our House!

January 17, 2014 by Rachel Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago I introduced you to Repreve, the company that uses recycled plastics and turns it into fibers for fabrics used in tons of awesome products like The North Face Denali jacket, Patagonia fleece products, and Ford uses the recycled fibers in their seats!

Buying products like this isn’t the only way we Turn It Green in our house. I’ve mentioned before that we’re a bit crunchy-granola in our house! Ha!!

We take the #TurnItGreen theme to a bit of an extreme in our house. Here are some ways we achieve this:

  1.  We eat almost entirely local and/or organic. It’s difficult to find both, but we tend to lean more towards local. It’s hard (and expensive) for small farmers to get USDA certified as organic, but most of the organic farmers we buy from farm without the use of harmful pesticides. And truthfully? I feel better eating bacon and hamburgers that I am confident are from hormone + antibiotic-free animals. :)Even when we go out to eat, we choose places that we know serve locally sourced, organic foods.
  2. We only use eco-friendly cleaners in our home. Method Products are my #1 go-to, but we also use Seventh Generation products, and Mrs. Meyers. There are sometimes rare occasions when we have to buy something to tackle the dreaded clogged drain, and that is not exactly eco-friendly (ha! not by a longshot!). And it totally breaks my heart. 3. We recycle EVERYTHING. All boxes, cardboard, plastic, paper, etc gets recycled.
  4. We compost. (and here’s where I lose some of you! Ha!). Composting is actually easier than you might think! We bought a collapsible bin a couple of years ago and we use it consistently during the summer. Every biodegradable item that comes out of our house, goes into the compost bin! 1-hibiscus-and-fiskar-composter_width579
  5. We have changed all of the light bulbs in our house to compact fluorescent bulbs. It’s saves on our energy costs, but it also saves the environment!
  6. We shop for quality, not for price. I’m not saying this exclusively, but we do tend to purchase products that will last longer, even if they are a bit more expensive. Effectively, we are spending less over time and saving on resources!
  7. We use a push-reel lawn mower. Granted, our yard is not big. But using a push reel lawn mower saves us money on fuel, helps save the environment, and helps us get some exercise! 230931325_640
  8. We go green! With paper, that is! We’ve turned almost entirely to eBooks and we do all of our banking and bill electronically.

And remember that Repreve beanie I received?? Well, I’ve been wearing it as I run! And I uploaded an Instagram Video to the #TurnItGreen Contest!

REPREVE // Review + Giveaway

January 3, 2014 by Rachel 9 Comments

I’ve been called a hippy a LOT. I, in fact, prefer to be referred to as ‘crunchy-granola.’ Why? Because that means absolutely nothing to most people. To us it means that we’re very eco- and health-conscious and do things that may seem ‘weird’ to other people.

I love finding companies who share the same philosophies and put them into action, which is why when I was introduced to REPREVE I fell in eco-love!

REPREVE is a recycled fiber that helps turn plastic bottles you recycle into cool stuff you can wear and use every day. Now there’s no excuse not to recycle!

A lot of brands you love use REPREVE to make their products greener:

• Volcom graphic t-shirts are made with REPREVE, using 2 recycled plastic bottles.
• One Patgonia fleece jacket with REPREVE has 40 recycled plastic bottles, so you can be a real “active-ist.”
• Life Khaki by Haggar uses REPREVE to put 7 recycled plastic bottles in every pair of pants; so wear what you believe.

Other brands made with REPREVE: The North Face, Polartec, Patagonia, Beija-Flor, Lauren Conrad’s XO(eco) by Blue Avocado, Swiftwick socks, and more.

repreve1

I was already a fan of companies like Patagonia and The North Face for their philosophies on nature and love of the outdoors, so to find out that these companies are also acting responsibly. And it’s nice to hear that all of our recycling efforts are not in vain! Our bottles are being turned into fabric which is being turned into awesome clothes!

REPREVE will take recycling to new heights with a special green event at the 2014 Winter X Games Aspen (Jan. 23-26, 2014).

It’s not just about free swag, though. This is an event with a serious mission: to show the world that we have to get everybody involved in recycling—to create a reprieve for the planet.

The luckiest plastic bottles get made into a recycled fleece beanie made from REPREVE. One REPREVE green beanie is made from 6 recycled plastic bottles! SIX bottles!

I have one of these amazing beanies and it’s been keeping this pixie cut head warm for the last week! Comfort + style + eco-friendly = HUGE win!

PLUS I have a second beanie for one of YOU! Use the rafflecopter widget below to enter to win a REPREVE Fleece Beanie of your own!

Good luck, friends! And keep trying to #TurnItGreen!

Green Living // Green-Cleaning

March 7, 2013 by Rachel 1 Comment

We’ve been fighting off some sort of funk in our house for a few days. Chad started to come down with something Saturday and Ari was acting funny at the sitter Monday — my poor babies! 🙁

I’ve been trying to keep the germs away as naturally as possible. I wash my hands a lot and I never touch my face or Ari if I’m out in public and have touched a door/shopping cart/etc. It seems obsessive, but I’d much rather be paranoid than deal with Babycakes getting sick.

But this opens up a question: How do I effectively clean our house without introducing hazardous chemicals, while getting the “germ-free” deep-clean I’m looking for?

Well I’ve been reading The Daily Green for tips on how to use green/sustainable products to keep my family and house healthy and happy.

These days I’m exclusively using Method products for all of our daily-cleaning. It’s safe, effective, and adorably packaged.

I know there’s a give-and-take with using green products. Using products without bleach won’t ensure a germ-free house; but using bleach will ensure that my baby and husband are subjected to hazardous fumes and chemicals. So that’s a risk I’m willing to take.

But knock-on-wood, Ari D and I have yet to get sick. The Method all-purpose cleaner and toilet bowl cleaner have been lifesavers. I’ve always regularly used the Method all-purpose cleaner, but now I’ve been using it more than ever — in the kitchen, the bathroom, dining room, etc. I never have any issues with breathing or headaches when using green cleaning products, which is why I’ll never go back to the toxic and harmful products I used to use.
