holidays

crossing my fingers…

December 16, 2009 by Rachel 16 Comments

I’m not trying to be a scrooge this holiday season. Sometimes it just happens.

This year is different. I have to travel back to Ohio on Christmas Eve this year. This could be a huge problem if the weather conditions are right (or wrong, depending on which way you look at it). If the weather is bad, I fear I will have to spend Christmas alone — something I have never done.

Many people have said, “you can spend Christmas with my family if that happens,” and, no offense, but I really only want to spend Christmas with my family. Thanks for your offers, but I really need to just be with family for the holidays (and by family, I mean BF–he is my family).

I know that worrying about the weather over a week in advance is not going to do me any good, but the thought of being stranded on Christmas Eve is overwhelming. And I am doing my best to arrange to get out of work early on Christmas Eve (which would put me back in Ohio around 6pm instead of midnight).

So if y’all wouldn’t mind, could you send me some positive vibes over the next week? And cross your fingers for good weather? I would appreciate it immensely!

true story tuesday

December 8, 2009 by Rachel 13 Comments

This week I have skipped the gym two days. My body is just exhausted, but I still feel guilty and I’m pretty sure those 7 fun size Twix bars didn’t help.

True story.

I got my lovely apron in the mail on Saturday and proceeded to make two dozen cupcakes for work. If you haven’t, you should really check out this incredible Etsy shop.

True story.

Last night I went to the Blue Tusk with Tracy & Josh, whom I had never met before, and I had such a great time! And the food was delicious! A lobster BLT (minus the T, of course)! I will definitely eat there again.

True story.

I have the Junior League of Syracuse holiday party tonight! And I will be inducted as a new member tonight.

True story.

The party is being held at Pascale’s Wine Bar, so needless to say my dry spell at the gym will probably continue tomorrow morning.

True story.

I get to drive back to Ohio Thursday night to spend the weekend with BF! I’m really excited! It’s been 10 days too long!

weekend wrap up: thanksgiving!

November 29, 2009 by Rachel 13 Comments

I am in a word: Sad. Our long Thanksgiving weekend was great, but it always ends too soon. He left about an hour ago to drive back to Ohio and now I’m sitting here watching Mr. & Mrs. Smith, budgeting and doing bills, and stalking some Cyber Monday deals.

Sigh.
Anyways, our first Thanksgiving alone was fantastic! The twice-baked potatoes, well, turned into mashed potatoes. And I accidentally put out the fire in the smoker (that was supposed to smoke the turkey)… oops! So we didn’t eat until around 8:45 PM, but it was delicious! And now I have wayyyy too many leftovers!

{our feast}

We did a lot of sleeping this weekend. Which is perfect. I did drag BF to the mall on Friday afternoon because I was sure I could get a super cheat Kitchen Aid hand mixer, but of course, they were out. So we walked around the mall watching the crazies while eating some gelato! Friday night we went to a Syracuse Crunch hockey game. It was a LOT of fun (except for the creepy guy sitting next to me who sneezed on my face… no big deal. Umm, wait… YES this IS a big deal!).

Saturday we woke up and went to the farmers market. Love the farmers market! What did I leave with? Five-year aged cheddar. Why? Because it seemed like a good idea at the time.
We also went to our fave Chinese restaurant, China Road, last night for dinner. It was delish, as usual, and left me with a belly ache, as usual.
Today I was bumming. Big time. Nothing like saying goodbye every two weeks. It pretty much sucks. So now I will just look forward to the next few days we will spend together and PRAY that a job situation opens up in Syracuse.

the thanksgiving meal plan

November 25, 2009 by Rachel 15 Comments

So tomorrow is the big day (aka the day I ruin make our first solo Thanksgiving dinner)! I’m honestly excited and terrified at the same time. I’ve done my best to prepare everything as far in advance as possible.

So here is how Thanksgiving dinner is looking:

Smoked Turkey (BF is helping)

Twice Baked Potatoes

Grandma’s Corn Bread Dressing

Broccoli and Cheese caserole

2-1lb frozen chopped broccoli
2 cans of cream of chicken soup
2 cans of milk
bisquick
butter
cheddar cheese

In a 9×13 baking pan, layer the frozen chopped broccoli in the bottom of the pan. In separate bowl, mix both cans of soup with 2 cans of milk together and pour over the top of the broccoli. Cut buter into a couple handfuls of Bisquick to make a crumble topping. Cover the soup mixture with shredded cheddar cheese. Cover cheese with crumble topping. Bake at 350 degrees 30-45 minutes until browned and bubbly.

And for dessert, I made an ice cream cake!

{we’ll see before and after pictures on Friday. This picture is form RealSimple, mine will hopefully look just as good!}

And as an extra dessert cause two people need two desserts? we have a pumpkin pie!

true story tuesday.

November 24, 2009 by Rachel 17 Comments

I did a LOT of preparing for Thanksgiving this weekend. I cleaned, did laundry, and got some of my meals together and put them in the freezer. This is the most domestic I have ever been. EVER.

True story.

I met up with Emily on Sunday. Hanging out with her always cheers me up! There’s a reason she is my heterosexual life partner.

True story.

I was a bit emotional Sunday night/Monday morning. It bothered me. I recognized it and tried to move past it, but it wouldn’t budge.

True story.

I was cheered up when I arrived home and realized that I wouldn’t have to deal with another Monday for a week.

True story.

Well, that and the fact that I came home to 4 boxes of goodies on my front porch (which included a new coffee maker, perfume and GPS that I won at work).

True story.

I also recieved a very special package from Valerie at Next to Heaven. I love these beautiful leaf earrings from her etsy shop.

True story.

I also received a box from Angela at the Preppy Polka Dot! I’ve been drinking out of a water glass for far too long looking for a beautiful new wine glass!

True story.

There are few things better than free pie from a local bakery that my work hands out every year. This year I chose pumpking and it was delivered to me at work this morning.

True story.

I only have today and tomorrow to get through. Then BF will be here for our first Thanksgiving alone-no family, nothing-just me and him! I’m really excited.

True story.
