1/2 Marathon

Just Keep Running // Training Update

July 29, 2014 by Rachel 1 Comment

A while back I set what seemed like a lofty goal. Scratch that — while I was running the Akron Marathon Relay last year I made a promise to myself that I would run the Akron Half Marathon this year. That’s right. I decided in the middle of my first major race that I would run the same race the following year — but in doing so I would complete my first ever half marathon.

I knew then and there that the energy and excitement I felt during the relay race would be enough to push me through a half marathon. Plus, seeing the hundreds of other men and women pumped up for 13.1 miles was inspiring. If ALL of these people could commit to finishing 13.1 miles, what could possibly be holding me back from doing the same thing!?

Well now I’m on week SIX of my training plan — I’m halfway there!! And over halfway there in distance!

Here’s how I’ve been working in my training runs:

3 mornings a week I get up early and head to the towpath trail to fit in 3 or 4 miles (usually 4 miles, 3 miles and then 4 miles another day). The other days I do my best to fit in some sort of strength training (which for me has been HIIT workouts via Turbo Fire — they are quick and intense!). Additionally – LOTS of stretching; even on days that I’m not running. And on Sundays I gear up for my ‘long run,’ which I’ve been trying to do with a group or partner (it makes the time pass by much more quickly and the miles not seem as long).

This past weekend I planned on using my long run day (Sunday) to run 7-miles. I started with a group of women from Cleveland MRTT. They were planning on running 9 miles at a 10-minute mile pace. But instead of turning around at 3.5 miles, I kept on.

… but I ended up running 8-miles instead. I just felt so awesome that I didn’t even need to stop!

The best part? I finished with a 9 minute, 13 second per mile pace!! It was incredibly consistent for my longest run to date! And I set a couple of PR’s! Woo hoo!

And yes, I’ve been taking post-run selfies every time I run. No, not because I’m super vain, but because I want to document my progress and how I’m feeling via pictures while I go through this process.

Sidenote: I am growing my hair back out and I am HATING the length. So right now I do what I can with it. Which isn’t much. Ugh. Oh well.

Over the next couple of weeks I’ll be fitting in a couple more long training runs, including the Perfect 10 Miler! I hadn’t planned on running a 10-mile race before the half marathon; but after talking to some of the MRTT ladies, my plan is to run it as a training run versus a race. That way I get some race-day jitters out of the way, plus knock out 10 miles I’ll need to do anyways!

Hopefully over the course of the next couple of months, the half marathon race course will start to look a bit less intimidating…

And I’ve yet to set a timed goal for the race. Right now my only goal is to finish. Any suggestions for goal times??

a letter to the weekend

December 4, 2009 by Rachel 5 Comments

Dear weekend,

I’m so happy to see you again! It’s been too long. So, my lovely weekend, I will be spending lots of time with you doing fun things!

Tomorrow I will go to the gym with a friend from work so that I can stay in shape! After the gym I’ll be meeting up with another friend to go for a run.

I suppose, dear weekend, that while you’re around I should probably do some cleaning and laundry as well. You’re good for that sort of thing.

As for our time together on Sunday, I figured I’d wake up to go for a run with a local track club. And then after that perhaps a body boot camp. Later Sunday afternoon I plan on meeting up with my heterosexual life partner.

So weekend, it sounds like you will keep me pretty busy. Treat me well, weekend. Please?

xoxo

thoughts, lists, and awards

July 13, 2009 by Rachel 9 Comments

There is so much on my mind on this crazy Monday morning. But it’s been a successful morning thus far! This is my (mostly) lame attempt at coming to grips with life on this beautiful Monday morning.
I woke up really early this morning to go for a run. Got a nice 2 and a half mile run in. It was a great feeling of accomplishment before the rest of the world woke up.

I must get my 101 in 1001 list done today. I’m giving myself a deadline. And it ends tonight!

I’ve been really thinking about all that I have to get done within the next few weeks. So here’s a sort of mini-list:
-find a new/used car.
-look at my 401k.
-visit the bank and make a deposit.
-book a hotel for S&S wedding.
-figure out what I can do for a going away party.

Last but not least! I received an award late last week and have not had a chance to acknowledge it yet! The Fabulous Brunette at Ramblings of a Fab Brunette gave me the MeMe Award! The award is all about the fabulous me! So here are the rules:

1. Share seven tidbits about myself.

2. Share the award with seven blog friends!

About me:

1. I love baking. Cookies, cakes, cupcakes, etc. Love it. But I rarely eat the desserts that I make. I would rather give them away and share them with people.

2. I don’t really eat chocolate. Once in a while (like last night) I’ll eat a little truffle from Godiva, but not very often.

3. I have an obsession with going to the movies. There is something very magical about movie theaters. I love everything! The opening credits, previews, the smell of the most unhealthy buttery popcorn in the world! It’s all amazing. Which is why if you read often you know that I go to the movies about once a week.

4. I am slightly OCD about organizing and organizational products. So I have to planners and I’m always browsing Real Simple magazine for more organization ideas.

5. I’m a huge advocate of power yoga. If you aren’t sure of what power yoga is, visit a previous post here.

6. I’m hosting my first blog giveaway. I’m giving away a monogrammed wine glass from the Preppy Polka Dot. If you haven’t entered yet, you really should.

7. I’m training for my first half marathon. 🙂

Seven fabulous bloggers are now tagged:
1. K13 at Someday I’ll Get There.
2. City Girl at City Girl Lifestyle.
3. Alexa at Cleveland’s a Plum.
4. Dawn at Thoughts From Along the Broken Road.
5. Domestic Goddess.
6. Carolyn at Hang On Little Tomato.
7. Lil Woman at Little Woman, Little Home.

Happy Monday, y’all!

manic monday doesn’t even begin to cover it.

June 16, 2009 by Rachel 3 Comments

Ridiculous day.

So yesterday I worked what I thought was OT to cover for some of the supervisors that couldn’t be there. No prob, right? I mean, a girl can use the extra dough! It was a fairly easy day. BF, who got to sleep in yesterday (I was very jealous) surprised me by offering to meet me for lunch. So we grabbed some soup and sandwiches (delish!) from Panera Bread. It was so nice of him and really made working on a Sunday bearable for me.

Since I worked yesterday I assumed this would be a less-harsh Monday than usual. I also knew that I absolutely HAD to call my doctor to follow up on my heart situation and test results. When I finally got ahold of the doctor I explained that the palpitations have increased in intensity and frequency. The doctor told me to go straight to the ER.
UGH.
I was in the middle of training a new hire at work and had to bail on him. Not to mention, I’m at a point where I really cannot afford to appear to be “slacking off” in any way.
I called BF, he almost panicked, but I explained it was just a precaution. He wanted to come with me, which I thought was sweet and I was completely appreciative, considering I was terrified! I also called my dad just to let him know that I was OK, but going to the ER. I think he has been sensitive to the fact that things do happen to peoples children, so he felt inclined to leave work and drive 45 minutes to meet us at the ER. It was sweet of him, too!
I’m not going to vent my frustrations here about the emergency room doctors and nurses and their lack of professionalism, but needless to say, some needles, blood samples, tests, poking and proding, and waiting… and they said I “seemed fine.”
Let me tell you. I. Am. Not. Fine. Having severe palpitations where you almost lose consciousness because of lack of oxygen?? Not healthy. I know my body and my health. This just recently began happening out of no where. This is not normal.
So BF and I went out for a very late lunch (we were starving while we waited) and then did some window shopping. Decided to take a nap (SO nice) and watch a movie. He was really focused on helping me to stop worrying about what was going to happen to me, health-wise.
He did a great job. 🙂
So even though the doctor said I have to temporarily suspend my workouts (and therefore my 1/2 Marathon training–BUMMER!) BF and I took a leisurely 2 and a half mile walk after dinner (Veggie Lo Mein – my fave!).
Have I mentioned that he is wonderful and caring?? Anywho, the drama that was today has exhausted me completely. I’m getting some Z’s!
PS. Love, love, love, LOVE my new layout from Krystyn! What do ya think?? 🙂
