101 in 1001

wish me luck!

January 14, 2012 by Rachel 5 Comments

I’m headed to Las Vegas for the first time ever!

{I know, I know. How is that even possible?!}

Even thought that means I have to get on an airplane during the first major snow storm of the season, I’m so excited! – and yay for anxiety meds!

But I’ll have a lot going on on this little blog while I’m gone. So stay tuned!

And if you have any tips for anything that is “must-see” in Vegas, let me know! We’re open to suggestions and don’t have a whole lot planned out!

Day Zero Project – Update.

December 15, 2010 by Rachel 4 Comments

I’ve been meaning to update my Day Zero Project list for some time now. But I’ve been putting it off. Probably because I’m no where near where I should be with my list of accomplishments.

Sadly, my last posted update was January 5th, 2010 — almost an entire year ago! Well, I’ve scratched some things off my list since then, luckily!

About the project: On Monday, July 13th, 2009, I created a list of 101 things to accomplish in 1001 days. The idea came from DayZeroProject.com. I have until April 19th, 2012 to complete my list!

The full list can be found here, but to sum it up, here’s what I’ve been busy getting accomplished these last 11 months:

Travel:
3. Go whitewater rafting. – Done. Our River Expeditions trip on 8/20-8/22 2010

10. Go camping. – Done. West Virginia, 8/20/10-8/22/10
13. Visit Denver. – Done. Thanksgiving week, 2010
16. Go to a Buffalo bills game. – Done. October 11, 2009
21. Go to Dinosaur BBQ with BF. – Done. Kind of. We went, but didn’t eat. Turns out I don’t like their food anymore. So I decided not to waste the trip with BF. However, I added number 21.5 to my list!
24. Go to Boston. – Only partially done. We went to a suburb of Boston briefly in April.
21 and a half. Participate in a polar bear plunge. – Done. January 2010.

Personal/Social:
30. Get a mani/pedi. – Done. April 2010 before our Maine trip. And July 3, 2010
34. Go an entire year without swearing. – Began 12/15/10
36. Send at least one hand-written note/card each month. – Been going strong with this one from the start!
40. Paint a new piece of pottery. – Done. 11/12/10

Financial:
64. Pay off half of my debts. – Will be a work in progress for some time.
65. Buy a new car. – Done. November 2010 I bought my first ever brand new car! see picture!
66. Pay off my credit cards. – This will be one of those ongoing things.
67. Re-evaluate and re-do my current budget. Then, sixty days after, reevaluate to determine if it works for me. – My budget has been reevaluated and still isn’t working. So, I’ll try again this month!
68. Sell unused electronics on Craigslist or Ebay. – Done. April 2010
71. Donate $150 to a non-profit. – I was donating to WCPN, our Cleveland NPR station, monthly.

Work/Education:
72. Start an online Etsy business. – I’ve begun the process. But nothing is online as of yet. Soon!
73. Find a new job. – Done. Umm I’ve done this a couple times
80. Read at least 25 new books. – Have read 4/25: “I Was Told There’d Be Cake”, Sloane Crosley; “Her Fearful Symmetry,” by Audrey Niffenegger; “The Help,” by Kathryn Stockett; “The Overnight Socialite,” by Bridie Clark;

Health/Wellness:
85. Go on a 30 day detox. – Done. October-November 2010
87. Get a massage. – Done. We got a couples massage in Maine, April 2010.

90. Go on a 30-day caffeine detox. – Done. October-November 2010.
93. Get my eyebrows waxed at least 3 times (this may seem really lame to some, but really I never NEED to have it done. I just thought it would be a nice thing to do for myself). – 1 of 3 times completed thus far!
94. Drink nothing but water for 30 days. – Done. October-November 2010.
97. Take a spinning class. – Done. 1/8/10.
100. Go without alcohol for 30 days. – Done. October-November 2010.

weekend wrap up.

October 18, 2010 by Rachel 14 Comments

Last week was a stressful week in the It’s A Hero household. It’s amazing what two misbehaving dogs will do to an already jam-packed week.
If you guessed they cause stress and exhaustion, you would be correct.

So Friday night BF and I got out of the house and went to dinner at Parasson’s Italian Restaurant in Stow. This is one of my favorite Italian restaurants!
I ordered the baked ravioli and I was so immersed in my food
that I couldn’t tell you what BF got
{but I’m pretty sure it was rigatoni something or other}.

We made it an early night cause Saturday morning was race day!
I headed to Hartville, Ohio for their 1st Annual Cannonball 5k Run!
While I have been training all summer, I was terrified to run this race.
The last race I ran was in 2007.
Plus BF was not running this race with me, so I was flying solo
{he badly sprained his ankle so he’s been laid up from it for two weeks}!

{Pre-race. Anxious.}
I came in 4th place for my age group, 10th overall female, and finished at 25 minutes 38 seconds! I may not be breaking records anytime soon, but I was pretty proud of myself!
{even if I almost threw up at the finish line – ha! That’s no joke.}

{Post-race}

I spent the afternoon in a food coma and sleeping.
It was just what my body needed!

After I recovered, I threw together some gluten-free cupcakes and put myself together for a Halloween party at the neighbors house.

{cupcakes}

For the party, I dressed up as a flapper
{great excuse to wear a dress I bought from Express}
and BF dressed up as a Biggest Loser contestant, post weight loss!

{all dolled up!}

I ended up taking my wig off shortly after some young kid
asked me if I was Lady Gaga…
He had no clue what a flapper was. Oh well.

Sunday I caught up on all many of the things on my to-do list!
Unfortunately not everything got crossed off my list,
but such is life!

What fun did you get yourself into this weekend?

whitewater wrap-up. a week late.

August 29, 2010 by Rachel 5 Comments

I cannot believe it’s taken me an entire week to talk about our whitewater rafting trip last weekend! But it has been a crazy week of recovering… You’ll understand in a minute.

When we arrived at the campground for River Expeditions we found out that we and 700 of our closest friends were camping that same weekend. That’s right. Seven.hundred.people. We found what appeared to be a quiet camping area. After all, it was 10PM, I’d been up since 5AM, we had just driven for 5 hours and we had a 9AM rafting time the next morning.

We set up camp, walked to the only wash house {700 people, half of which I’m assuming were female, and about 8 bathroom stalls and ten showers? Gross.}, and decided to get some sleep to prepare for a physically tough next day.

Sleep never happened. The whole campground was loud, but we had a group of hillbillies next to us who were screaming all night. Screaming instead of talking. When they were only feet from each other. Screaming about Natty Light.

Not even our Tylenol PM we had taken could keep us asleep. And I’m pretty sure in a drugged-up haze, I told BF I wanted to throw a brick at the hillbillies heads. He asked me where I’d get the brick. I ignored him.

At around 2AM we made an executive decision to sleep in our car. Our itty-bitty, two-door, Honda Civic. So we did.

The next morning we checked in for rafting and went directly to the 20-minute breakfast line. Surely they must have something delicious if all of those people were waiting for a continental breakfast, right?

Wrong. Oh so wrong. But I’m not even going to complain about the food. I had fruit that we brought instead. What I’m going to complain about is mine, and quite a few others, request for water.

There were two options: from-concentrate OJ or coffee. Here’s the deal. Recent stomach issues and coffee or juice before going out on a 6 or 7 hour long trip in the great outdoors? Not gonna happen. So hence my question about why the water from the soda machine wasn’t working. Her response: We are putting more water in the juice. Um, ok, but what about just water? Didn’t happen.

The rafting trip itself was incredible. We were in a boat with a great group of people. There’s something about being put in a situation where you really have to rely on people around you to instantly make a group of strangers close. I loved it.

Post-rafting we ran into one of my favorite bloggers, Analiese from Tulips and Tea, and her husband Jason! This was by far, my favorite part of the trip. We hung out, fireside, for a few hours and had a lot of laughs! I hope to meet up with her again and hope our paths cross in the future!

So all-in-all, the trip was a success. But we are now recovering. BF has bronchitis and I am just trying to stay healthy.

However, we will never, ever go back to River Expeditions. The outfitter we used last year, ACE Resort, was awesome and the only place I would truly recommend to anyone. You can see my old post here to see the differences in trips.
