the rules of life. learn ’em dude.

August 28, 2009 in annoyances

So I’ve talked a bit about this in prior posts, but I have issues with everything with people who seem to disobey every social norm in public spaces.

It shouldn’t surprise you (or maybe it would?) that I was a sociology and anthropology major in college. I love trying to figure out why people in groups act the way that they do.

So let’s talk about physical and social spaces. They are very much related. We interact in public space so there are certain norms of how to behave. I think I will someday write a book called:

How to Be a Better Person, or something along those lines.

Here is a rough outline of my chapters:

Chapter 1: Yes I know you’re in a hurry and have much more important things to be doing, unlike me…. I’m just going to work so I guess it’s OK for you to drive on the shoulder to get around me and a hundred other cars waiting patiently.

Chapter 2: You control how much space is between yourself and the person next to you (AKA, me) so please get your hand/purse/cane off of my butt.

Chapter 3: Yelling at cashiers is not cool. Not now. Not ever. Don’t make me relive Target lady on you.*

Chapter 4: Your child is trying to kill me by blocking the exit/kicking me in line/punching me while you read People magazine. Thanks for making me never want children.

Chapter 5: No one wants to hear your loud and obnoxious cell phone conversation.

Chapter 6: I didn’t ask for your opinion on (insert: my life/my tattoos/my lifestyle/anything) so please keep your mouth shut.

Chapter 7: The drive-thru was not created so that you could order 14 happy meals and 7 big macs without getting your *** out of the car. It’s rude (and lazy) to do this in the drive-thru.

OK so this could go on FOREVER. Seriously.

Get a clue rude people!

*I think I have previously shared the Target lady story. Someone remind me. If not, it’s worth sharing.

This list sounds like it was written by me! I love it – we would get along so well!

One day recently, I was waiting at my salon to get my hair cut and this little boy (who belonged to a woman who worked there) ran up and started poking me with a sharp screwdriver (hard)! I told him to stop and he kept doing it, so I stood up and told him (in a meaner voice) to quite poking me!

Finally, he got scared and ran off – but seriously, what is wrong with people who refuse to watch their kids? His mother was literally 2 rooms away and had no idea where he was. My salon is in an old house and he could have just walked out of any one of the 3doors! Ridiculous!

Hope you have a great weekend!

Another thing, why do people insist on customizing a Whopper at Burger King. I say, just order it “as is” and pick of whatever you don't like. It would say us all a lot of aggravation and your food is less likely to be spat upon.

Well said – you have posted what we all think. Thanks!

This is great! I would like to add–If I can smell or feel your breath when you are talking to me, you are standing too close.

Awesome list!! I don't recall your Target story…

And hello DRIVE THRU people – when will they learn..I once had someone come thru the SBUX drive thru and order 12 beverages!!!!! Totally ridiculous!!!

I am a sociology major as well. Of course I am now a stay at home wife/mom to be, but I still enjoy stuff like this. I would totally go in on a book with you lol.

Although I will defend people who make special orders in the drive through. My hubs eats a lot and sometimes our taco bell order is 15 items long, I don't think we should have to go inside to order what we want. Now, 14 happy meals is a bit different as is 12 drinks.

Also, my hubs can't just order a “whopper as it and pick off what you don't want”. He is allergic to things like tomatoes and onions and has to ask them to not put them on. Considering they make the sandwich for us we aren't asking THEM to pick it off – just don't put it on! Not a big deal in my opinion. Plus I like extra pickles damn it!

haha. I agree with you on all of these! I am a big believer of personal space in public and it drives me crazy when someone stands too close to me. Especially when it's not even necessary!

This is so incredibly true!! I can't stand people who feel the rules don't apply to them, just to everyone else. how could you think that way?!

Couldn't have said it better myself

I hate it when people think that what ever they are doing must be more important than what ever I am doing. Such a sense of entitlement
